Hi all, this winter I'd like to get a new set up for jigging. I have read getting a medium heavy fast action tip is most common for jigs. I have never used a rod longer than 6'6 but am willing to try up to 7'. I am pretty short so I feel a longer rod would be a little more troublesome. Last year I caught 75% of my bass on jigs and they are what I throw more than anything else. I used a combo from dick's abu garcia medium lightning rod and silver max reel.

I'm looking to get a rod and reel for around 150 up to 200$. What ratio reel would be ideal for jigging, I don't ever cast far while jigging. Um, what rod do you all recommend for the price range? Any help would be appreciated!!! Oh yea I'm throwing 3/8-1/2 oz jigs 99% of the time.

Take a look at the Abu Veritas in 7ft MH. Its extremely light so I think the length will not bother you at all. Then you can spend the rest on a nice reel of your choice. The Veritas is $99. If you wanna spend a little less then the Vendetta is $20 less, but a bit heavier. There is a rebate if you buy a Veritas and Abu reel.

I would go with a 7'MH Abu Garcia Vendetta with a 6.4-7.1 BPS Pro Qualifier.

It's a fairly inexpensive setup and it has served me well this past year.

A 6'6" rod is perfectly fine for jigs, IMO.

My personal jig rod is a 6'6" MHF Daiwa Cielo, and it works great for me.

I'm going to second the suggestion for the Veritas ($100); the 6'6 MH I use for jigs has been an amazing rod, very lightweight and sensitive. I also use a 7' M BPS Carbonlite rod (also $100) for light jigs, shaky heads, etc and feel that it's in the same range as the Veritas for sensitivity and weight.

Rod length is preference more than anything IMO. You will get a lot of suggestions here for a 7' rod but if you're more comfortable with a 6'6 go with that. I'm not that short but I find most handles on a 7' rod to be slightly too long; they end up getting caught on my clothing etc.

For reels you have quite a few options. The BPS ProQualifier is right around $100. If you wanted to spend slightly more you also have the Revo S ($130), Citica ($120) or BPS Carbonlite ($120). If you do some searching or hit up an online auction site you should be able to find the Revo or Citica for right at $100. Any of those reels should easily suit your needs.

Thanks guys! I just went to Gander and felt the Veritas and immediately it just felt right. I felt some other rods like the skeet Reese rods, carrot stix, st croix's, etc. and honestly it came down to the Veritas and Vendetta. I bought a Veritas MH 7'. I really was 50/50 with the 6'6 or 7' but decided to get the 7' as the length didn't seem that much different. Everything is iced up here so i can't even go out with it yet but I did get a 1 year warranty in which is the 7' just isn't for me I can return it.

Now it's time for a reel.

You could always split the difference and get the 6'9" MH if the 7' doesn't work out.

If you have a BPS anywhere near you see if they have any of the Pro Qualifier Tournament reels.  They only come in a 6.4:1 ratio but that may be fast enough for you.  They're black with rainbow glitter in the paint, and they're basically a Carbonlite minus the clicking cast control, and with a different handle.  IIRC, they're $80 and in-store only.

If you want to stay at 6'6", I'd look at the Pinnacle Perfecta worm & jig rod, 6'6"MH.  I won this rod last year and really like it.

I find a 6' 10 rod ideal for Texas rigs & light jigs; the Shimano Caenan CAE 100 is an outstanding reel @ $90 but so it the Citica 200 E @ $120.

For "feel" type techniques like jigs, t-rigs etc. I'd suggest skewing your budget toward the rod and get the lightest, most sensitive you think you can afford and pick up a decent used 7.1:1 reel. I prefer a 7' rod but 6'6" is fine especially for the lighter jigs.

I am pretty sure they have 7.1 Tournament pq's. I saw them last week. I bought a 6.4, they had them setup in the sun and the sparkle got me.

I fish out of the back of a Basstender, which puts my feet at about water level.  I just picked up a 6'0' MH rod since I don't think the extra length will help me with flippin/pitchin.

X2... I love that Rod

I'll have to check on it.  I wouldn't think they had a 7:1 since the Carbonlite is not available in it.  I've got a gear set and drag from the regular PQ on the way I'm going to try and make my own.

I think the pq and carbonlite are the same reels just different colors and the carbonlite has a carbon handle. they look exactly the same. The tourny pq is identical.

My jig setup is a Shimano Core100MG/6'8 MHF Shimano Cumara.

Yea the PQT and CL are pretty much the same reel.  I'm not sure the standard PQ gears and drag will work in the in the CL/PQT but I'm going to try it.

I have used a lot of highend reels and I like these BPS reels as much as anything I've ever used.  The only thing (other than the paint job on the Carbonlite ;D) that I want different about them is a higher IPT.  Hopefully I'll have that taken care of next week.

I was telling a buddy of mine earlier today something has really got to be wrong with me....I've got BPS reels on Steez rods!! ;)
