lynyrdsky1 Posted January 3, 2011 Posted January 3, 2011 Why did BPS discontinue these rods? I love them, Just bought another two. 7'6 mh and a 6'10 mh Quote
Super User *Hootie Posted January 3, 2011 Super User Posted January 3, 2011 Can't answer your question, but apparently the have also discontinued the Nitro reel, because it dos not appear in their new 2011 catalog. Why do they always discontinue stuff I like? Quote
Stasher1 Posted January 3, 2011 Posted January 3, 2011 It probably had something to do with the ever-increasing popularity of light-weight rods and reels. The Nitro series rods and reels were both considerably heavier than many other rods and reels in their price range(s). Quote
flipin4bass Posted January 4, 2011 Posted January 4, 2011 Yeah....those gurly men need lighter equipment. ;D I've been using a Nitro combo for a frog outfit for the past 3 seasons and I don't think it can beat for brute strength. Good news though, the Inshore Extreme reel is the same reel so should anything happen to your Nitro you could replace it with the Extreme. Quote
Super User skunked_again Posted January 4, 2011 Super User Posted January 4, 2011 the problem is the Nitros no longer compete with the newer rod fads... Quote
The Rooster Posted January 5, 2011 Posted January 5, 2011 Looks like they also dropped the Rick Clunn RCX rods and reels too. They're not in the 2011 catalog. But, what they did do is introduce another reel that looks just like a RCX with Johnny Morris' name on it, and it weighs the same as the RCX did. I'm not sure what they're thinking, and it's obvious they do notice message boards and what is being said about their stuff (look at the PQ's description this year mentioning it), but yet they still brought out another heavy reel. Quote
Stasher1 Posted January 5, 2011 Posted January 5, 2011 They tweaked and relabeled their existing reels, and redesigned their Johnny Morris rods with cheaper components and called them "upgraded". : Quote
Stasher1 Posted January 5, 2011 Posted January 5, 2011 The JM Elite Series has apparently been discontinued entirely, but it had a split cork grip and Recoil guides. Their JM Signature Series rods used to come with a full cork grip and Fuji titanium-framed SiC guides. They're now the Signature Series II, and are built with a foam/rubber split grip and stainless/Alconite guides. Where's the "upgrade"? Quote

And keep in mind, the Signature II is $60 less than the Elite series was. Quote
Super User KYntucky Warmouth Posted January 6, 2011 Super User Posted January 6, 2011 They have also replaced Clunn on "The Bass Pros" and done away with The Art of Angling section on the show. Atleast the "new" JM reel is a good color, I didn't care too much for the purple. Bass pro tends to change the colors and call it a new reel like the instore tournement reels. I like what they did to the Bionic Blade but they need to re-do the Extreme line. Quote

They probably won't change anything since the extreme is their "work horse" reel and if they change anything and screw it up they know people will be ticked. Quote
Stasher1 Posted January 6, 2011 Posted January 6, 2011 Those new guides (K-Guides) are the latest design from Fuji. I don't doubt that, and I'm sure they're excellent...but it's definitely a step down in materials used in their construction. And keep in mind, the Signature II is $60 less than the Elite series was. But we're not talking about a replacement for the Elite, are we? This is the next generation of the Signature Series, which retailed for $170. So, we only have a $30 difference in price. Don't get me wrong, a JM Sig blank at that price is a heck of a deal (and it'll be even better when they go on sale for ~$119), but BPS is defintely cutting material costs to get the price that low. Quote
MarauderYak Posted January 7, 2011 Posted January 7, 2011 Stasher1, Since all the Johnny Morris rods are using the same blank material, you can easily compare either of the old series to either of the new. I compared the old Elite to the new Signature II because if you look at the lengths & actions you can see that they have the exact same blanks. The new Carbon Black rods have the exact same blanks as the old Signature rods. In any case, yes, these K-Guides are less expensive than the recoils were. Quote
