I"ve done a lot of searching on this forum (some great info by the way) about recoil guides and seems to be a lot of back and forth.  Some people claim they groove with braid and wear the line out sooner, and others have used braid and claim to have no problems.  I'm looking at getting a 6'10" Legend Extreme M/XF spinning rod for senkos, and will be using suffix braid exclusively on it.  So before i drop some serious ching on this badboy, what are your opinions on the recoils?  Thanks for your input and happy new year!

Well, it depends on how good quality are them recoils, good quality recoils will not groove with braided line, bad quality recoils will grove purty darn fast with braided line.

In a Leyend Extreme you will have no problem with the guides grooving.

Yea I would think you should have no problem with grooving at that level of rod... but I would almost guarantee they will still be super noisy with braid, but if that doesn't bother you will be glad you have them when you step on that eye.

I use braid on a Loomis GLX rod with Recoil guides - noisy as heck - but no grooving...

Recoils are nice if you fish in freezing temps.

For the ability to de-ice them by bending them, correct ?

Recoil guides are fine with braid.  Ceramic guides are good with braid also.  The problem with braid cutting into ceramics is when a fish makes long, hard runs.  Particularly in saltwater species.  For example; Wahoo are hard hitting and extremely fast fish.  Wahoo will cause the braid to dig into the guides after a period of time.

I used braid exclusively on my Legend Extreme this past season and didn't have a single complaint. I wouldn't have purchased a rod in this price range if I wasn't 100% confident in the materials and the company. They are basically staking the reputation of their top-of-the-line rods on the REC guides.

From what I have read, St. Croix has done extensive testing on these guides with braid without any issue. Now, you can take a random poster's word for it, or you could email St. Croix and ask.

Whets

My GLX Dropshot rod has recoil guides and this is my experience also.

My GLX Shaky Head rod has recoils. I just use fluorocarbon. Noise problem solved.  ;D

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I recall reading that most grooving is the result of fine particles of dirt embedded within the fibers of the braid. This debris is not present in new braid but is picked up over time, especially fishing dirty water.

for what its worth i have 2 saltwater rods that ive been using for about 5 years or more now with powerpro braid. it is old braid that i leave on most of the summer and then flip over and use again before i discard it. i have no wear on my guides and no visible or noticable damage/wear to the rod in anyway. i have caught 4 foot sharks and countless redfish and blues on these rods.

the rods?  hahah..... uglystick graphite pros.

if those guides dont have a problem... then the recoils should/better be fine.

I have three BPS Johnny Morris Elite rods with recoil guides that I have fished braid on exclusively for two years and I like them alot.  They do not groove but are noisy.  They will break however.  One was broken upon being shipped to me and I have broken one while trying to get a hook out of a submerged tree.  They don't break easily but they will break.

In my case, you're absolutely correct! I do have some Fireline braid (bought on your recommendation - you finally got me with the famous photo ;D) ready for when the PP finally wears out... :)

Ha - I knew you'd say that! ;D However, my frugal nature requires that I use things until they are "used up"; I've caught 423 fish so far on that 150yd spool of PP and lots more fish to catch before it's used up.... :) After that, the Fireline braid goes on. :o
