Fish Chris Posted January 3, 2011 Posted January 3, 2011 {of course this pertains to spinning only.... the only reels that matter } Just as I first reported, my new Shimano Sahara feels very smooth, and precise. Solid. Tight. And I think it looks great too. In fact, I think Shimano has the best styling of pretty much any reel company out there. But their is something about this reel, and in fact, pretty much every Shimano I have ever used, that just doesn't feel right to me. It might be the heavier reel handle pressure I mentioned in that other thread.... or a shorter cranking arm... or maybe something else I just can't quite put into words. Oh, and honestly, I don't think it would be much, if any different, if it were a $700 Shimano Stella. It's just a Shimano thing in general. This is exactly why I used to be such a hard-core Daiwa guy. My old $50 Regal Z's felt like they were made for my hand. Only problem is, Daiwa has a really crappy, limited selection of spinning reels nowadays, especially in the micro-light (or 1000) series. Not to mention, the styling on most new Daiwa's is freaking aweful So this leaves me wondering, what next ? Pflueger ? Abu Garcia ? Hmmmm. Fish PS, The whole Shimano thing kind of reminds me of Porsche. I know they are very well built, perform great, and most people love them...... But I've never been a Porsche guy either. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted January 3, 2011 Super User Posted January 3, 2011 Find a nice Presso: Quote
Fish Chris Posted January 3, 2011 Author Posted January 3, 2011 Wow ! I thought I'd seen them all That reel actually looks quite nice. Is that a cork crank knob ? Interesting. I wonder how durable it is ? Presso's huh ? Will look them up now. Cool. Much thanks. Fish Oh, but hey now, I think this reel looks fantastic too.... http://www.pfluegerfishing.com/products/products.php?p=44 a little out of my price range. I'm looking for $60 to $100.... Quote
Super User J Francho Posted January 3, 2011 Super User Posted January 3, 2011 The '08 Presso can be found on eBay. The only knock on it is line capacity, but its basically Daiwa's top flight JDM ultra light. I've ALWAYS wanted one. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted January 3, 2011 Super User Posted January 3, 2011 Another source that I trust, but pricey: http://www.japantackle.com/Daiwa_reels/Daiwa_Presso08.htm Quote
Fish Chris Posted January 3, 2011 Author Posted January 3, 2011 Holy #$#@$# ! Found them http://www.bass.jp/reel.php?c=reel&mode=detail&uid=4960652740142 $228 :) And if those are not sweet enough.... http://www.bass.jp/reel.php?c=reel&mode=detail&uid=4960652740173 $446 ! Why is it that Japan has all of the sweetest bass tackle ? Quote
Fish Chris Posted January 3, 2011 Author Posted January 3, 2011 In fact, I was just going back through all of the reels on that page, and Holy $#@% ! Those things are ALL freaking bad a$$ ! But also ALL WAY expensive ! Almost makes me wish I actually worked for a living..... but then I wouldn't have much time to fish..... Oh well. http://www.bass.jp/reel.php?c=reel&mode=catlist&m=Daiwa&tcat=Spinning&cat=Spinning Unbelievable choices.... Fish Quote
Super User J Francho Posted January 3, 2011 Super User Posted January 3, 2011 That's pocket change, LOL. Here's the real deal: http://www.japantackle.com/Daiwa_reels/Daiwa_Exist50th.htm Quote

Lucky Craft Man Posted January 3, 2011 Posted January 3, 2011 I've always been a fan of the Pflueger Supreme. They are not that expensive (Retail $99.99, but you can find sales or use coupons and get them for $79.99 or lower). A workhorse of a reel and a little lighter than the Sahara. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted January 3, 2011 Super User Posted January 3, 2011 Chris, try and find a Daiwa Capricorn XTC, for around $50. Nice, tight looking little reel, the 1500: Quote
SeanW Posted January 3, 2011 Posted January 3, 2011 Im really happy with the Abu Garcia Soron STX. It is by no means what Id call light, but it is a great reel. The nice thing is it comes with 2 spools, one being for braid. Im sure you can find the same with with Pflueger. Quote
Fish Chris Posted January 3, 2011 Author Posted January 3, 2011 Hey much thanks again guys..... and because of me being poor, it probably will be either one of those Phlegers, ..... or a Daiwa Capricorn.... or a Abu Garcia Soron STX.... I will have another look at all of these. But I have a question about that super-sweet Japenese tackle... Even if I could afford it. If I finally managed to get it over here to the US, and then, in a year.... or 5, I had a problem with it, could / would Daiwa US fix it ? Or would it have to be shipped all the way back to Japan ? Because obviously with reels of that caliber / price, you don't just toss them and scoop up a new one..... Hmmmm. Thanks again. Time to go play Maybe Sturgeon fishing tomorrow. Peace, Fish PS, If I were to successfully land a big Sturgy on my little Sahara 1000, that might make it feel better to me Quote
Super User J Francho Posted January 3, 2011 Super User Posted January 3, 2011 The only time I run into issues is when there's a funky feature on a reel, or its long since discontinued. I can still get parts, and many USDM versions have the same parts too. Daiwa USA won't have anything to do with it, AFAIK. I'm sure DVT Mike would help you maintain it. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted January 3, 2011 Super User Posted January 3, 2011 Bilge is right about the supreme, maybe the best out there under a $100, I have 3 and used one of them over a year in saltwater for snook and small tarpon. Being an avid abu man and loving my 4 sorons, my next may be the patriarch. Any shimano priced under a stradic is not even a remote consideration. Quote
CAdeltaLipRipper Posted January 3, 2011 Posted January 3, 2011 no freakin way i was just about to come in here and post a question about my shimano sahara lol Quote
Super User Raul Posted January 3, 2011 Super User Posted January 3, 2011 Why is it that Japan has all of the sweetest bass tackle ? Cuz consumers are willing to shell out the big bucks. However, want an affordable very sweet reel try the Revros line, at around 75-80 bucks a pop they are affordable and I certainly recommend them because I 've got one. Quote
