Brent1 Posted December 28, 2010 Posted December 28, 2010 What do you guys do when you transport your fishing rods? I know most of you have boats, so obviously you throw them in the rod compartments or tie them down, but what about you guys that have trucks? Do you just put your rods in the bed of your truck? I've been doing this, but I'm worried that my bed liner is gonna scratch up the rods and guides and scuff up my reels. I'm thinking about buying a few pvc tubes and lining them with something to make my own rod tubes. Any other methods? Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted December 28, 2010 Super User Posted December 28, 2010 I put three bars across the bed of my pickup (the anti-load shifting type). I enclosed them with foam pipe insulation. I have two of them near the tailgate that I put the reels between (to prevent sliding) and the other supports the rod at and 3/4 the way to the tip. I have them placed about 8" below the top of the bed which leaves the whole bed free to carry other stuff. That gives me room for 10-15 rigs. I also carry around a dozen in the boat rod locker. Quote
Super User BASSclary Posted December 28, 2010 Super User Posted December 28, 2010 http://www.stickjacket.com/Web/Home.php x A billion those things are awesome. And to protect my reels I use a 4 dollar neoprene cover from BPS Quote
Super User Long Mike Posted December 29, 2010 Super User Posted December 29, 2010 I agree about the Stickjackets. Quote
Super User Fishing Rhino Posted December 29, 2010 Super User Posted December 29, 2010 Stick jackets. Then lay a towel down. Put the first rod's reel near the end of the towel. Place a second towel over the first rod's reel. Place the second rod's reel on the towel, against the first, then fold the towel back over the first two. Place the third poles reel on the first towel, then unfold the second towel to cover that reel. Set the fourth combo's reel on the second towel, and fold it back over the rods. Place the fifth combo's reel on the first towel, then unfold the second towel to cover the fifth reel, and so on. Stagger the reels so they aren't side by each and you can safely get a lot of rods in a fairly small place. Viewed from the end, it would have the configuration of corrugated cardboard with a reel in each open section. I'd venture that I could safely store and transport 30 or more combos in a single rod locker on my Z7. Quote
Revo_Carrot Stix Posted December 29, 2010 Posted December 29, 2010 I use BPS rod socks and put them in a Flambeau Bazuka Rod case on long trips via pickup truck or airplane. The Bazuka can take a beating from the airlines and gravel/dirt roads (dust). I like the Bazuka because it's adjustable for various rod lengths. Quote
TBendBassin Posted December 29, 2010 Posted December 29, 2010 you should check out pro lockers http://www.prolockeroutdoors.com/3001.html Mike McClelland's dad started these things pretty sweet. Quote
0119 Posted December 30, 2010 Posted December 30, 2010 My truck is a short bed Chev Colorado and carrying more than a couple of rods meant propping them up over the tailgate. I made a 4 legged, 2 cross bar rod holder out of PVC that I saw posted on the brotherhood of catfishermen website. It props them up and allows the reels to hang free and far apart enough that they donthit each other. I still keep them in reel covers though. Got stick jackets for Christmas so I'll be trying them too. Quote

RandySBreth Posted December 30, 2010 Posted December 30, 2010 Yep - rod socks are fine for short distances, but the Bazuka is the way to go if traveling any distance at all. Another option is actual multi-piece travel rods that have their own individual tube - but most folks are stuck on one piece rods. Quote
Super User 00 mod Posted December 30, 2010 Super User Posted December 30, 2010 ok, not to hijack this thread, and If I am please remove, but what about in your boat if you do not have a rod locker? What rod racks do you use then? Jeff Quote

0119 Posted December 30, 2010 Posted December 30, 2010 I'd hate to have to pack my combos in all that luggage if Im beatin' the bank. You'd be packing and unpacking more than fishing. If you dont want to redneck engineer something, check out a fly fishing retailer for a fly rod holder that carries 2-4 outfits via magnets and suction to your hood and roof. Quote
