Super User bilgerat Posted December 27, 2010 Super User Posted December 27, 2010 A clean and lubed reel is a happy reel. The performance difference from a dirty reel to a maintained one can be very noticable. I do a complete teardown, clean and lube every winter myself. Most guys here opt to send them out. It's the best money you'll spend, and it's actually pretty inexpensive. Quote
Super User BASSclary Posted December 27, 2010 Super User Posted December 27, 2010 If your comfortable doing it yourself, then by all means go ahead. However I would recommend you pick up the Ardent Reel Cleaning kit for $20, and that when taking your reel apart take plenty of picture incase you forget how to put it back together. Quote
Super User bilgerat Posted December 27, 2010 Super User Posted December 27, 2010 If you do decide to try it youself, try and get access to a copy machine that has the ability to enlarge images and have several blown up copies of your reel schematics made. They're easier to read and you can make notes on them without wrecking the original. Also pay very close attention to every single part you remove as to it's orientation. A lot of schematics don't show the individual detail of each part, but there can be a difference. Quote

jdw174 Posted December 28, 2010 Posted December 28, 2010 When the time comes for a really GOOD cleaning, I send all of mine away for service. The shop I use does an outstanding job. I don't do this every year, though. I make sure my reels are wiped down and properly oiled. Usually every couple of years. It's worth every penny. Quote
steezy Posted December 28, 2010 Posted December 28, 2010 Definitely get them serviced by a pro. My only advice is to make sure you agree on the return shipping method to avoid any issues with costs. A lot of reel service outfits like to use the u.s. post office for return shipping but I don't like the limited tracking by the postal service, I prefer UPS or Fedex so I can track the exact location of the package. Super User Shane J Posted December 28, 2010 Super User Posted December 28, 2010 I wouldn't have it any other way. Each year, all my reels take a road trip! Quote
