Micropterus salmoides Posted December 21, 2010 Posted December 21, 2010 Which would you choose for jigs and soft plastics, the 7:1 Steez 103SHA or 6.3:1 Steez 103HA?
Fish Chris Posted December 21, 2010 Posted December 21, 2010 At over $500, none of them. Too darn expensive. I don't doubt they are very nice reels. But $500 Nice ? I don't think so. You have to know (because reel companies sure do) that a large % of the sales of such an item, are directly because they are so expensive. Their are just a lot of people out there that will buy an item based soley on the high price. Compared to a $79, or $99 Shimano, I'm thinking these reels might be worth about $150.... Heck, $189.95 tops. But I bet they will sell more of them at $500+ than they would, the very same reel for $250.... this would be most especially true, if they also sold another reel for $299.95 Peace, Fish
fathom Posted December 21, 2010 Posted December 21, 2010 either. conventional wisdom may say the faster of the two, but there isn't a great deal of difference between the ipt of these two reels...have used both and they both handle this app. extremely well. as to the value of these two reels or any other, one man's trash is always another's treasure.
bassinbrian Posted December 21, 2010 Posted December 21, 2010 I agree either would work, I perfer the 7.1 but it doesnt come in lefthand! So I went with a 6.3 to try it and it works great.

So many good reels in the sub $150 range that work great, even store brand reels from BPS and Cabela's. But if you have the money and it makes you feel better, go for it. After all a heavy wallet just hurts your back.

Super User J Francho Posted December 21, 2010 Super User Posted December 21, 2010 Gimme a break, unless you've used one, and have the means, you don't have any business answering. There actually are some subtle differences here worth noting, other than being crazy expensive. I'd want the help before spending the coin on one. Which would you choose for jigs and soft plastics, the 7:1 Steez 103SHA or 6.3:1 Steez 103HA? I would use the faster reel, though I might go with the STEEZ100SHA with added line capacity, unless you are just pitching to short targets.

Super User Raul Posted December 21, 2010 Super User Posted December 21, 2010 Diffrnt strokes for diffrnt folks, would I shell ot 500+ bones in a fishing reel ? ------> heck yeah, actually, why just one ?, would I shell out 500 bones for a car stereo or a pair of exotic skin boots ? no friggin 'way never. It 's a matter of perspective. So back on to the question, which one ? well I 'd say the SHA Now that I come and think about it, having the monet I 'd purchase both just for the pleasure.
Super User J Francho Posted December 21, 2010 Super User Posted December 21, 2010 Truth is, they are less than $500. If you're patient, you can find them for around $350 in the "barely used" market.
Fish Chris Posted December 21, 2010 Posted December 21, 2010 Well J F, unless you've used one, and have the means, you don't have any business answering. Maybe somewhat true. There actually are some subtle differences here worth noting, Well sure, and in my exact words > I don't doubt they are very nice reels. But my whole point is, I know how marketing works. It's all based on a curve. You can get a really nice really for $79.95. You can get one that is 10% better, for 100% more $. Or, you can get one that is 2% nicer yet, for 500% more $. Is that 2% gain worth spending 5 X's as much ? Sure, if you have the means, and nothing else you'd rather spend it on. I just can't believe these reels would be high on the "value per $" list. On that note, I really have no desire to buy / use a Steez, or a Stella, even after having handled them in the stores. But what I really would like to try would be a Stradic CL4. $200 is still a lot for a reel, in my book. But that would be the kind of reel that I'd use for a couple years until I wore it sloppy, and then, I'd actually go through the trouble of sending it back in to be completely overhauled to perform like new. Peace, Fish
Super User J Francho Posted December 21, 2010 Super User Posted December 21, 2010 Actually, the original question was about a baitcaster..... ;D The CI4 2500 twists a bit more than any Daiwa I've used, and requires a tiny bit more effort, due to 6:1 gearing. The IPT is aonly slightly more than a Daiwa 2500 with an ACS spool, since the spool diameter is larger. The main deal with the CI4 is weight, or lack of.
Micropterus salmoides Posted December 21, 2010 Author Posted December 21, 2010 Thanks for the replies. My main question was 7:1 vs 6.3:1 for jigs & soft plastics. I listed the reel because it's the one I'm considering. I don't plan on paying full retail. As far as IPT, the 103HA/100HA has 26" and the 103SHA/100SHA has 29.8", quite a significant difference to me. Look at how many people suggest the Zillion 100SHA because of its higher IPT, which is 3.6" more than the 100HA.

Look at how many people suggest the Zillion 100SHA because of its higher IPT, which is 3.6" more than the 100HA. I think you are mistaken. The STEEZ103SHA and STEEZ100SHA have the SAME IPT, 29.8. The difference is in the line capacities. Unless I was doing shorter casts, I'd be using the higher capacity reel. See for yourself: http://www.daiwa.com/reel/detail.aspx?id=432
Super User Raul Posted December 21, 2010 Super User Posted December 21, 2010 Chris, you 're going around in circles, what you think, what you consider to be worth is that, what YOU think, another person will have another perspective and opinion, RW says: C 'mon, I 've seen your truck, I haven 't but from what RW can tell you are a petrol head and like kool trucks, me ? when it comes to vehicles I am as cheap as I can get, you know what I drive ? a 2005 Courier pick up, the cheapest model, don 't even got a radio ( like if I care ), no way I 'm going to spend more in a more expensive pick up truck not even I dime, no way I 'm going to spend the extra 1000 dollars upgrading for the same vehicle but with radio, ac and hydraulic steering. Different perspective.

Peace, Fish OK I can comment on this one since I OWN ONE. The CI4 is a fantastic reel.
Micropterus salmoides Posted December 21, 2010 Author Posted December 21, 2010 J. Franco, you're right. I knew the difference, but didn't include the letters. I'll change it. Thanks.
Super User J Francho Posted December 21, 2010 Super User Posted December 21, 2010 And I had eliminated the 6.3 from the debate from the get go. Unless you are going to use it for moving baits, get the faster reel.
rubba bubba Posted December 21, 2010 Posted December 21, 2010 Thanks for the replies. My main question was 7:1 vs 6.3:1 for jigs & soft plastics. Assuming the IPT's are different, the higher IPT is normally preferred for soft plastics for 2 reasons: to pick up the slack after a hookset when the fish charges the boat, and to more quickly reel in the lure after it exits "the zone" so you can have more casts for the same amount of time fishing.
Fish Chris Posted December 21, 2010 Posted December 21, 2010 what you consider to be worth is that, what YOU think, another person will have another perspective and opinion, Raul, well yes, of course. Every post you will ever read in this forum is just one person's perspective. Some people might agree, others won't. But I'd think that when making a post, asking for replies, you are actually just asking for different perspectives. I just gave mine. As for spending a lot on a truck.... Well, mines pretty odd ball {like me } I think it would look better if it were taller, bigger wheels, etc, but for my wallet, that's not worth the $8K to $12K to do it right.... and I never do anything half arsed. On the other hand, a loud, clean, full, pro sounding stereo is very important to me. {or should I say, my music, is very important to me} So heck yea'.... I spent a TON of my time and labor, and about $2200, for a $5000 setup. Never regretted 1 minute, or 1 penny spent on that though Who the heck needs stinkin' back seats in a truck anyway ? Peace, Fish
Super User SoFlaBassAddict Posted December 21, 2010 Super User Posted December 21, 2010 Chris, if you were a woman, I might have proposed to you just now.
0119 Posted December 21, 2010 Posted December 21, 2010 Your right about the opinion thing....like if you dont do anything half arse, why did you just buy a Sahara? But your right its just an opinion thing!
Super User Raul Posted December 21, 2010 Super User Posted December 21, 2010 Man, if I were to install that amp in my pick up I would need to add 4 or 5 extra batteries in the bed cuz the one under the hood ain 't gonna cut it ..... the woofer ? ......... uh, I don 't think there 's 'nuff space for me and the woofer in the cockpit. :-?
Fish Chris Posted December 22, 2010 Posted December 22, 2010 0119, if you dont do anything half arse, why did you just buy a Sahara? Simple... Because I don't believe their will be any fish I could land on a 1000 series Steez or Stella, that I could not land on that 1000 Sahara Raul, actually, this is a very efficient class D amp, plus the fact, that I'm running it into a very easy, extra efficient load of 2 ohms, even though it's rated to 1 ohm. This means it never over heats, the output stays ultra clean, and it's very easy on the battery.... although I do have an extra heavy duty, special purpose battery as well + a seperate voltage meter so I don't have to worry about my voltage dropping too low to start the truck. Anyway, it sounds really nice Peace, Fish
