Chaz Hickcox Posted November 17, 2010 Posted November 17, 2010 So about a week and a half ago I bought a 7' Field and Stream M XF Spec Tec Casting rod (their worm rod) from Dick's. Don't think down on it, it's one of the best crankbait rods I have ever used and it's only 60 bones. I have their flipping rod too and that is awesome as well. Anyways, back on point, I used the hell out of that rod during a tournament on vet's day. When trying to retrieve my partner's LC crankbait out of some knees we had some tree limbs drag three of my rods off the boat. I had the Spec Tec in my hand when I dove for my other rods. When I landed I snapped the Spec Tec in half. Luckily it was the end of the day so we didn't have to worry too much. Anyways, I took the rod and luckily still had the reciept back to Dick's and they replaced the rod with no questions asked. Pretty cool if you ask me. Quote
B-Dozer Posted November 17, 2010 Posted November 17, 2010 Good to know, they just opened a Dick's not too far from me. did you tell them you fell on it? Quote
Chaz Hickcox Posted November 17, 2010 Author Posted November 17, 2010 They didn't ask. Literally, 'I bought this rod and it broke yesterday.' 'Oh, so did you want to exchange it?' 'Yes.' 'Ok, go pick out the one you want to exchange it with.' That's pretty close to verbatim. Quote
TBendBassin Posted November 17, 2010 Posted November 17, 2010 thats exactly how Academy is too!! i bought an all star rod from them 8yrs ago and it broke within the first month if i remember correctly and its just been sitting in the tackle room at my camp.. well this past spring i was like what the hell i should try and take it back lol at least i could get an instore credit and get some tackle.. so i took it back and no questions asked they gave me instore credit for a 8yr old rod lol Quote

Super User J Francho Posted November 17, 2010 Super User Posted November 17, 2010 Literally, 'I bought this rod and it broke yesterday.' Shouldn't that read,"I bought this rod and broke it yesterday." :-? Quote
SDoolittle Posted November 17, 2010 Posted November 17, 2010 "It broke" sounds better than "I broke it". It makes it sound as if it was due to a manufacturing defect instead of negligence. Quote

Chaz Hickcox Posted November 17, 2010 Author Posted November 17, 2010 Come on people, it broke - I broke it, either way it broke and they didn't ask how or why. No dishonest intentions were planned there. Had they asked id have told them exactly what I said here. I just think its cool they didn't ask, it tells me that no matter how it happened they still take care of their customers. Judge not lest ye be judged. B-Dozer Posted November 17, 2010 Posted November 17, 2010 Just funnin with ya. I think places that do this more than make up for it with customer loyalty. Cabelas is very good at this too.. No need to go to confession, you are forgiven my son Quote
Super User J Francho Posted November 17, 2010 Super User Posted November 17, 2010 LOL, you're too sensitive today. I love messing with semantics. Yeah, its pretty well known that Dick's has a pretty liberal return policy. As long as you didn't walk out of the store, and break the rod over your knee, they'll usually oblige. Just don't abuse the system, or that policy goes away. Quote
gotarheelz14 Posted November 17, 2010 Posted November 17, 2010 Yeppers. That is how they make their money. Customers like me love that policy so we come back! It makes sense. The only thing I would say though is that Dicks as well as Gander mountain have a plan where you pay about $15 for a true "no questions asked" return policy on their rods. You simply come in, swap one out and you are out of the store. This might be worth looking into as well. Carlos Quote

BPS has their gear guard, but that is a hassle because its not a return policy, you have to send your stuff into the manufacturer. JFranco - not touchy just like my integrity. Its all cool 8-) Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted November 17, 2010 Super User Posted November 17, 2010 I like Dick's. Some months ago I wanted a rod that was no longer in stock at my local store. A sales person located the rod at a Dicks several hundred miles away and had it shipped to my door with no additional shipping charge. For the type of gear I use they have more than an ample supply. HomersTomaco Posted November 19, 2010 Posted November 19, 2010 You don't send The rod to the manufacture with that gear guard, you just call a number if you break a rod and they send you a gift card for what you paid for it Quote

Super User Dan: Posted November 19, 2010 Super User Posted November 19, 2010 That's fine, I'm just adding another good service they have available to find merchandise that isn't available in store. Quote
Stasher1 Posted November 19, 2010 Posted November 19, 2010 My only complaint with Dick's rod warranty is the 30 day limit on refunds. If you have a problem after that, you're stuck swapping it out for an identical item. Quote
Owasco Posted November 19, 2010 Posted November 19, 2010 I bought a rod and reel combo from Dick's over the summer for my son and the rod broke. I did purchase the warranty but I can't find the documentation or even the receipt so I have not returned it. Does anyone know how they will handle it if I just walk in with it? Thanks Quote

BTW, the warranty that they sell you in store gives your coverage but you are supposed to handle it through the toll free number provided on the warranty brochure, not by taking it back to the store, however many managers will take care of you if you do take it back to the store. weewilly Posted December 11, 2010 Posted December 11, 2010 have good luck with them.seem very helpful Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted December 12, 2010 Global Moderator Posted December 12, 2010 I took an easy up that got crushed by a downpour back to them this summer. I didn't have a reciept and they let me go grab a new one and trade it in, not questions asked. I would say it's worth a try at least, worst they can do is say no and you still have a broken rod. scrutch Posted December 12, 2010 Posted December 12, 2010 I've had great experiences with Dick's as well. Great return policy. Don't forget to ask if there's anything on clearance. I did and got a Loomis rod for $62. Quote

It seems everybody else's dicks sporting goods has really nice rods, at the two Dicks sporting goods near my house the best rod they carry is a St.Croix Triumph :-[ Quote
