philsoreel Posted November 29, 2010 Posted November 29, 2010 I just got excited by the sound of the UPS truck, knowing that my new spool of Toray SH Upgrade was finally here. My excitement was turned sour very quickly upon opening the package. The line is yellowish gold not clear like it appears to be in the pics of TackleTour's review. I've never used this line before so I may be mistaken but in all of my previous experiences with fluorocarbon yellow line means it's old. Old line is no good in my book. Especially, when paying premium prices for it. So, can anyone with some Toray experience or knowledge tell me if this line has a dingy tint to it or did I get an older spool? Quote
Super User Raul Posted November 29, 2010 Super User Posted November 29, 2010 I 've fished with Toray Super Hard Strong and they aren 't kidding with the name in any way, it 's super hard and super strong at the fullest extent, however I swear I don 't feel it 's better than BPS Fluorocarbon and cost a lot more and has less yds per spool. For florocarbon I prefer Seaguar Carbon Pro, but now that 't 's discontinued maybe I 'll change it either for InvizX or AbrazX, still haven 't decided yet, but since I have several spools left of CP I can wait. What # line did you pick up? 16lb. I mentioned it on TackleTour hoping someone can give me some insight into the matter. I know the color means it's old. What I don't know is if that translates into compromised integrity. I always try to buy line at stores that move large amounts of line to try to avoid getting old line. Quote

I hope this doesn't affect the integrity of the line since fluoro is supposed to last far longer than nylon mono. However, I have very limited first hand experience with fluoro to this point. Quote

I fished the line last year quite a bit, and it was OK. For the cost, it isn't worth it to me. There are comparable lines for a lot less. Then again, I'd rather fish Tatsu anyhow. Quote

That's really what I wanted to know, if it had a little gold tint already. I've had a change of heart. I'm going to keep it and just see what happen's. I know it's expensive but I would rather spend the time it would take to package and ship it back, out on the water. 8-) Quote

I totally jumped the gun on this one. I had a reputable source(not saying anyone else who has commented on this is not reputable) inform me that it indeed has a slight gold tint. I went ahead and spooled up. So far everything is looking very good. It handles quite well for 16lb. line. I know three days of fishing is hardly adequate to consider it "battle tested" but I know what I like, and I am liking it. Quote
Lcomfort Posted December 5, 2010 Posted December 5, 2010 I have fished that line a lot and it always has a yello/goldish hue to it I have never seen it any other way. I no longer fish that line as I have become a HUGE fan of #1 Sunline Shooter and #2 Megabass Dragon call FC I like them better overall. The Shooter is slightly less stiff and more Sensitive to me then Upgrade but Upgrade is more abrasion resistant. Dont worry you about the color you will love that line and it will last you a long time that stuff looks great in the water or should I say doesnt look great in the water because its hard to see lol. Fish it enjoy it and next time you buy so high end FC try Shooter you will not want to fish anything else after. Quote

I hope both lines perform as well as I have heard come spring time. Yeah, sorry about that. Didn't mean to send you into cardiac arrest but I was a little upset. I am really liking this line. Very sensitive, good knots, and low stretch. Those three aspects are the most important to me and so far it's the best FC I've used in those aspects. Don't get me wrong, it casts great, that's just not a big issue to me when using a baitcaster. I need 8lb. for shakeyhead to. I think this Toray maybe a little stiff for spinning gear tho. Let me know how the 8 feels. I really want to try Shooter and Tatsu. So many people say Tatsu is the cream of the crop but I have a bad taste in my mouth from Seaguar. Silly putty....I mean Invizx has that terrible stretch problem. I'm hesitant to try Tat because of that. Quote
