New grips on Mojo rod?

Hey all, I recently bought a St. Croix Mojo cranking rod and the cork on the handle is a little too short for my liking. My lower palm and pinky finger slide off the grip on long casts and it feels like I'm about to throw the rod.

I know that grips are pretty cheap at the rodbuilding sites but don't know how big of a job it is to change them or what size I would need for my rod. I actually like the foam grips on the Garcias and carbonlites better than cork.

My rod is a St. Croix SCII 7 foot MH, Mod action

Any insite to on should I bother or grip sizes would be appreciated. If I could regrip it for the same lose that I would take selling it, I would rather grip it and give it a chance to see if I like it.

I have the same problem with the tiny grip of the mojo too. Sadly regripping would require going from the tip down to the grip because of the taper of the blank so I think removing and installing a new rear grip is not cost effective. Ive been thinking about trying some of the tacky grip tape sold by BPS but have heard they dont stick very well, so Im trying to live with the poorly thougt out tiny grip myself.

A grip can be installed from the butt end but you have to compensate for the taper with an arbor of some type. Drywall mesh tape works well. Masking tape can used if you're carful to epoxy between arbors. If the taper not too fast, heavy thread will work. EVA grips are much easier to install from the back because they'll stretch. Another alternative is to spilt a couple cork rings and glue them in place to lengthen the existing grip and then sanding to match. It's all a lot of work for a rod you may not like after all though.

Thanks for the replys. I didn't think about the taper going all of the way to the butt. If I do anything it will be the splitting a cork ring that was mentioned.

I looked at the new Mojo glass cranking stick yesterday and the grip was longer on it. I don't know if it is because the rod is longer or if they had feedback about the problem and made a running change.

Awhile back I saw a pic of custom rods that were done with a wrapping or paracord for the grip, it had a varnished or poly coating applied afterwards.  Very sharp rod and I liked the grip idea but I havent found any info on the net on how to do it.

I used Cork Handlebar Tape from a bike shop on my Carrot Stix.  Worked like a charm.  Added an 1/8th oz. to the rod and increased the comfort x10000000000.  Costs anywhere from $3-$20 for a package.

Did you put it on from the bottom?
