DaveT63 Posted November 29, 2010 Posted November 29, 2010 I'm away from home on a business trip and visited a local tackle shop. They have a brand new BCR804 GLX with 4-5 inches broken off the tip. They are asking $175 for it. Since I flew here, I would have to buy a tube to either check it, or mail it home in. Would it be worthwhile to buy it for that price and send it in to be replaced? And what if I could get it even cheaper? Thanks, Dave Quote
Carrington Posted November 29, 2010 Posted November 29, 2010 I wouldnt buy it personally, the action wont exactly be what it should. Quote
Super User islandbass Posted November 30, 2010 Super User Posted November 30, 2010 Take that cost plus whatever the expeditor service fee is (used to be $50, could be more now) and factor in the shipping cost for you to get it home. If that sum is still less than the MSRP, then it would be a decent deal. If not, I'd pass. Quote
Super User Marty Posted November 30, 2010 Super User Posted November 30, 2010 I wouldn't buy a broken rod. Unless you are absolutely addicted to Loomis, you can get some outstanding, brand-new rods in one piece for that $175. Quote
RussBert Posted November 30, 2010 Posted November 30, 2010 Different people see things in different ways. Me, I'd call that stealing. That is why Loomis had to change the warranty according to Bantam1 who posts here (He's the Shimano, GLoomis & PowerPro factory rep) Quote
Super User J Francho Posted November 30, 2010 Super User Posted November 30, 2010 $175 for the rod $30 to ship it home $100 for Xpediter Seems like a lot of work for a rod that you won't be able to replace, since Xpediter is a one time service. That's assuming the deal is even kosher. Quote
tnbassfisher Posted November 30, 2010 Posted November 30, 2010 Doesn't sound like it would be worth the amount of money you will end up spending just on shipping. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted November 30, 2010 Super User Posted November 30, 2010 With a little patience you can get the same rod (new or slightly used) or something comparable for ~$250 delivered. Quote
Super User Bassn Blvd Posted November 30, 2010 Super User Posted November 30, 2010 That rod retails at $385. 175 Rod 100 Expediter 30 Shipping +___ $305 If you keep an eye out on here, you can get a used one in very good condition for a lot less than a new one. Question. Why won't the shop send the rod in via expediter instead of selling it broken? I would buy it for $150 if it was legit. Just don't let it break for a 2nd time or your screwed. Quote

That is why Loomis had to change the warranty according to Bantam1 who posts here (He's the Shimano, GLoomis & PowerPro factory rep) i dont understand how that is stealing. why does it matter who returns the rod, the buyer or seller? would it be stealing if the seller used the expeditor service and sold it afterwards for $100 more? i would pass on the rod. you can only use expeditor once so if you broke it, you'd be short. im sure there is a work around, however... Super User J Francho Posted November 30, 2010 Super User Posted November 30, 2010 It doesn't matter what Russ, you, or I think it is. Its what G. Loomis' Service Department says. I'd call them, see if they will honor the Xpediter Service on this rod. My bet, no. The retailer should deal with the rod appropriately. A certain amount of "damaged inventory" should be built into their plan. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted November 30, 2010 Posted November 30, 2010 Seems like a lot of hoop jumping for a relatively small savings. As stated, you can probably find a better deal on a slightly used one. I'm not a fan of these expediter type programs. IMO they jack up the cost of the rod for everyone and are often abused. A good company stands by their product and makes things right when they mess up, but the manufacturer should not feel compelled to cover misuse and rough handling. I'd rather see an opt-in program with an up front cost for those interested, like an extended warranty deal. Quote
Super User Grey Wolf Posted November 30, 2010 Super User Posted November 30, 2010 Don't waste your money !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Quote
SDoolittle Posted November 30, 2010 Posted November 30, 2010 You should definately buy this rod. Then, you should contact Ern for a broken, $24 Quantum reel to put on it. Quote

Here's why it might be considered stealing by some. If the intent is to purchase a rod that is drastically discounted because it's broken, having it replaced with a new rod on a warranty exchange may be seen as a dishonest abuse of the 'no questions asked' policy. bigfruits Posted November 30, 2010 Posted November 30, 2010 Loomis is still going to get $100 and will still have replace that particular rod. that excuse for the change in the service is a smoke screen, IMO. Quote

jeb2 Posted December 1, 2010 Posted December 1, 2010 The financial side of it seems to be well covered, but I'd ask what kind of fishing you're going to do with it? Deep water feel stuff? All purpose rod? I have two of the BCR804 GLX's and it's really not a great rod. I already had two the 803 GLX's, which are outstanding for jig/rig fishing, but the 804's are not nearly as impressive for some reason. They have failed to find a strong use in my boat and tend to not get a lot of fishing time because of it. Quote
