Is Hot Sauce oil all I need????

Yesterday, somehow dirt or another foreign substance got in one of my reels. I am about to take it apart and clean it. Is Hot Sauce Reel Oil all I need to lube everything or do I need grease also. The reel is a Shimano Core 50.

I'm sure you'll get people telling you to not use hot sauce period.  I've used it without problems and really liked it.  You can use the oil by itself but grease has better longevity on internal gears.  If you just use oil, you'll need to reapply sooner than with grease.

Ok. What about the bearings? I've heard of people taking the shields off of bearings, blowing the grease out, and putting oil in them. Is this common practice?

The Core is a nice reel and probably worthy of a pro service, but if you decide to DIY, clean all traces of old lube, grease gears and sliding parts, 1 drop of oil on each bearing. Make sure to have the schematic in front of you and put aside time to do the whole job. Good luck.

I have the oil that came with the reel. I just thought Hot Sauce was better??? Never heard anything bad about it, haven't asked either.

Yeah....that's what I do.  I'm sure there are other methods for cleaning bearings.

Yeah, after pulling the sideplate and taking a few glances I think I'll let someone else(that knows what they are doing) tackle this. What do you charge?

IMPO I would NOT use HS in any Shimano reel. The oil and grease are manufactured with a Teflon base in both and was made for the Hybrid PT bearings that Quantum uses in their upper end reels. Use the oil that came with the reel and you will have no problems....

Oil the bearings and levelwind worm gear, and lightly coat the centrifugal brake drum with oil. Grease everything else. I like Superlube grease, which has a PTFE additive, in any reel. Hot Sauce performs well but I just hate the red dye, which migrates all over the inside of the reel. I prefer Yellow Rocket Fuel or Reel Butter bearing oil. If you fish a lot in winter and high reel performance is a big priority (it's not, for me), you might want a lighter viscosity oil like Shimano oil rather than YRF. Viscosity is very temperature dependent for most reel oils. But there is no free lunch - a very low viscosity oil will have to be replenished more often in warmer weather.

I measured the viscosities of a number of lubes a while back and thought I'd post them here in case anyone might be interested in the numbers. These may not all be common reel lubes, but I threw some various oils in for comparison. I also recently ran the Reel Butter oil, but I need to look that one up and then I'll add it into the list.

The viscosity units are in centi-Poise (1/100 of a Poise) and the lower the value, the less viscous. For a few points of reference, water is 1 cP, vegetable oils run in the range of 70-80 and SAE 30 Motor Oil would be around 200 cP. I also ran Mobil-1 0-30W synthetic and interestingly, it looks a lot more like a 40W than an 0W. So here's the list in order from highest to lowest:

and lightly coat the centrifugal brake drum with oil.

You can do this if you want, but it will reduce the effectiveness of the brake.  The brake will work better with a dry, clean brake drum.

Thanks everyone, especially that little bit of info about Hot Sauce and Shimano's. I guess I'll continue to use HS in my old Pfluegers but stick with the oil Shimano sends with their reels.
