Super User new2BC4bass Posted November 26, 2010 Super User Posted November 26, 2010 The best leader knot tyou can tie is "opposing nail knots" very easy to tie with a knot tying tool. Nearly impossible without the tool. Difference in line diameter does not matter and you cant break the knot. I have broken the line on both sides, but never had a knot failure. Excellent through the guides as well. Try it!This is the tool..... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5b5b_32Cexs It talks about fly line, but it works for any leader connection. Ronnie I had seen some drawings of nail knots before (using a nail, of course!). They always looked too complicated for me to accomplish. I thank you for the link. This tool definitely will allow me to tie a knot faster than the Alberto. Don't know if it will be as strong, but I will take you at your word. Now I need to locate one of those tools. Quote

B-Dozer Posted November 26, 2010 Posted November 26, 2010 I have one of those tools cause I fly fish, but a piece of heat-shrink tube will also work in a pinch. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted November 29, 2010 Super User Posted November 29, 2010 Not to hi-jack this thread but it this may be of use to other newbies to the alberto knot. I have tried it with 20lb braid to both a 10lb and 12lb flouro leader. Seem to have a problem with the knot breaking. All I get back is the frayed end of the braid. This is happening on hooksets and when the lure is stuck. I know it has to be something I am doing wrong but can't figure it out. Anyone have any thoughts? I think the issue here might be the smaller diameter of the 10-12lb flouro leader that you are using. Just a guess here...but perhaps the 180 bend on the leader is being pinched down to such a small radius that it becomes a stress concentrator (kinked). If that kink breaks, you are going to get back a little a little club of braid with a frayed tag end. Sounds like what you are describing... As I mentioned above...I use this knot if the leader diameter is large: ~0.50mm diameter (i.e. 30lb flouro leader material). On applications I need smaller diameter flouro (i.e. finesse conditions) I just go straight flouro- mainly because I'm nervous about hooking a big fish with such a small amount of shock material. I don't have any issues with 15# Power Pro and leader down to 4#. In fact, along with bass, I've caught trout over ten pounds using this knot. Quote
Super User Deleted account Posted November 29, 2010 Super User Posted November 29, 2010 Uni to uni, 8-12 wraps on braid 3 on mono. Alberto owes me money! Quote
Jaheff Posted November 29, 2010 Posted November 29, 2010 My brother in law still uses a regular albright and has caught tuna up to 45 lbs. Here's mine 24lbs using the Alberto. Granted I was using a 25yrd top shot of mono, but the knot was out there and had to come through the guides. Caught three on this set up. Quote
