Novak94 Posted November 3, 2010 Posted November 3, 2010 ok, so me and my roomate have been discussing these two reels and he has come to the conclusion that they are the "same" meaning made by the same company. I disagree with him and just wanted to get some more info from people that know what they are talking about. BTW its my first post! Thanks guys Quote
OHIO Posted November 3, 2010 Posted November 3, 2010 I have heard that the Carbonlite is made by Browning along with a lot of other BPS products, but I don't know for sure. I have gotten so many different answers to who makes BPS products that I just stopped caring. They are both good reels, but I don't think they are the same. Quote

How do you know if it's good or not? Quote
Super User KYntucky Warmouth Posted November 3, 2010 Super User Posted November 3, 2010 As far as I can tell they are nothing alike. Quantum uses an externally adjustable centrifugal braking system (ACS) that is specific to most if not all their reels. The Carbonlite has a DBS which is prominent within the Pure Fishing circle of companies. The drags are also different with a Rulon drag on the Carbonlite and a PT Ceramic drag on the smoke. There's honestly nothing similar with the exception of foam grips that are different shapes. Quote
Dr. Watson Posted November 3, 2010 Posted November 3, 2010 The Carbonlite is made by Pfleuger, the Smoke is Quantum. The Carbonlite is a good reel, it's made out of aircraft grade aluminum. It is also cheaper than the Smoke. I have no experience with the smoke, but I hear good things, It has some quality components, should make a good reel. Anyway, they are not the same Manufacturer. Quote
Super User webertime Posted November 3, 2010 Super User Posted November 3, 2010 It appears that the Smoke has the same ACS that other Quantum reels (Catalyst,Energy,Accurist) have. You will hit the ACS knob and not realize it and backlash. I watched it happen to a few guys this summer, all had the same complaint, when you palm that reel you will at one point or another knock the ACS off where you had it set. The Carbonlite's is smaller and slightly reccesed. It's a PURE reel (BPS, Browning, Pflueger, Abu). Quote
RussBert Posted November 3, 2010 Posted November 3, 2010 Quote The Carbonlite is made by Pfleuger, No. Pure Fishing owns the Pflueger name, and has the reels made off shore in either Korea or China in a variety of manufacturers. Quote
Dr. Watson Posted November 3, 2010 Posted November 3, 2010 BPS contracts all of their reels to be made by Pfleuger, just because Pfleuger is owned by another company (Pure Fishing) doesn't mean that the reels are not made by them (Pfleuger). In turn Pure fishing is building the reel under the Pfleuger name who is in turn putting BPS's name on it. Quote

Super User BASSclary Posted November 3, 2010 Super User Posted November 3, 2010 He is wayyyyy off. Pure Fishing and Quantum have completely different styling, and completely different braking systems. Saying they're made by the same person is like saying Daiwa and Shimano are made by the same person. They're obviously not. Quote

If you have insider information then please feel free to share. I already wrote what I know from him, he said, "The Carbonlite is made by Pfleuger" That is not correct. The CarbonLite is made at the same factory as some Pflueger reels, but considering Bass Pro was making reels there way before Pfluefer was, it would be closer to the truth to say Bass Pro makes reels for Pflueger. However neither of those is correct. Both Pflueger (Pure) and Bass Pro design their own reels & use factories owned by third parties to build them. And just to clarify, Quantum also uses third party factories to build their reels, and in this case it is not the same factory where the CarbonLite is built. Quote
Dr. Watson Posted November 3, 2010 Posted November 3, 2010 I went to TT and a few other forums and it seems that the common statement between all of them is that Silstar/Pinnacle is the OEM for BPS, Pfleuger, and Browning. They all seem similar, with their brake systems and even appearances. Quote
MKirsch Posted November 25, 2010 Posted November 25, 2010 I work for Pflueger and we do not make any private label brands. There is a separation of church and state. Quote

Your friend is mistaken. are Pure fishing and BPS reels made by the same OEM? Yes. Does pure fishing make or design the reels? No. ALL BPS Reels from the Extreme up are made in Korea by Doyo Engineering as well as the Revo and Pflueger baitcasting reels. Main Gear parts for the Revo Series are imported from Europe and Barrings from Japan then other parts like drag, spool and body parts are in house and assembled by DOYO . All the BPS stuff is in house at DOYO. This is coming first hand from one of the Technical Advisers for DOYO who is a personal friend of mine here in Korea Quote

Google Doyo and you can get lots of hits. Follow some of them and you will see their involvement in fishing equipment and U.S. customers like Shakespeare and "Laker Fishing Tackle." Laker is owned by Eagle Claw (aka Wright & McGill Co.) and this statement was on an Eagle Claw web page: "Laker Fishing Tackle is based in Camdenton, MO and specializes in importing a wide variety of products including rods, reels, tackle accessories and many products for private label programs with major retailers throughout the United States." Don't know whether the private label programs that they're referring to includes BPS but it's an interesting factoid. Another link will take you to a U.S. patent held by Doyo on the sideplate release pin design used on the BPS PQ and Carbonlite (and others probably). Also interesting. Just amazing what shows up on a Google search - including this thread which Google has already found ... ;D Quote
