HAPPY247 Posted November 17, 2010 Posted November 17, 2010 Okay everybody, I am a newbie and I need some help. My husband loves his bass fishing and loves his fishing equipment - we seriously have the fishing section of of any sporting good store in our garage but I figure, hey I love shoes, he loves fishing so it's give and take. I purchased him a new baitcast reel for his birthday - Abu Garcia Revo Premier - and he loved it (yea for me!). He has mentioned that he needs a new spinning reel and I am completely clueless - I would love to get him a new one for Christmas so could you guys give me your picks for a great spinning reel under $150? Or will it be impossible to get something decent for that price? Also, what kind of rod would you choose to go with it - he broke his favorite earlier this year and was heartbroken. I truly appreciate everybody's help!!!! Quote
Super User J Francho Posted November 17, 2010 Super User Posted November 17, 2010 See if you can get the specs off the broken rod. Just about ANY spinning reel in the 100-150 range is going to be a fine reel. Quote

Maybe you can teach her how to shop. I really do not need a Coach purse. : Quote
piscicidal Posted November 17, 2010 Posted November 17, 2010 My wife got me a Shimano Stradic 2500FI two years ago as a gift. I wanted a reel and that was perfect... An Abu Garcia Soron STX20 would be a great choice as well. I have one of these and like it as much as the Stradic. Quote

I would get the 2500 size. Quote

Super User QUAKEnSHAKE Posted November 18, 2010 Super User Posted November 18, 2010 I too say Shimano Stradic FI. I have used one for a couple years now and very pleased with it. I have the smaller 1000 size havent had any durability issues at all but then I hardly ever catch bass over 18" Quote
Super User BASSclary Posted November 18, 2010 Super User Posted November 18, 2010 Stradic FI. SHIMANO makes the best spinning reels in my opinion and the FI is nothing short of great! I'd get a 2500 size. Quote

CWilliams Posted November 18, 2010 Posted November 18, 2010 CI4 for $160 at http://www.reedssports.com/Product/Product.taf?_function=detail&_ID=20627 Going to be hard to beat at that price. Quote
HAPPY247 Posted November 18, 2010 Author Posted November 18, 2010 Thanks everybody - I appreciate all the responses, hopefully my husband will love it. Now to just do some serious shopping and find the best price. Happy holidays to you all!! Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted November 18, 2010 Posted November 18, 2010 The Pflueger President @ $70 +/- is one of the best bangs-for-your-buck in a spinning reel. The difference could go toward a replacement rod. Just a thought... Quote
Super User NorcalBassin Posted November 19, 2010 Super User Posted November 19, 2010 I have both the Stradic and Soron STX... if I needed one more I'd save the few extra dollars and get the STX. Super smooth, looks good, and he already loves the Premier from Abu. Not going to lose either way though. Quote
SeanW Posted November 21, 2010 Posted November 21, 2010 My wife got me a Shimano Stradic 2500FI two years ago as a gift. I wanted a reel and that was perfect... An Abu Garcia Soron STX20 would be a great choice as well. I have one of these and like it as much as the Stradic. I agree on the Abu Soron, great reel. I have several Stradics and while its a great reel, the drag system is not comparable at all. The Soron drag is much better. I fish light line on my spinning reels so drag is everything. Quote
