OHIO Posted October 27, 2010 Posted October 27, 2010 I don't agree with the Skunked's post about breaking rods. I've never broken a rod on a hook set, fresh or salt. I do some type of fishing every day of the year. The only times I've broken a rod have been from stupid human error. Fan, car door, tailgate, etc etc. That stuff he was fishing didn't look that thick. You can see thicker grass than that down here on a regular basis. Bill Dance comes to mind... Quote
s13john Posted October 27, 2010 Posted October 27, 2010 plus he was putting his hand way up the blank lifting the fish. thats a good way to break a rod. Quote
Captain Obvious Posted October 27, 2010 Posted October 27, 2010 Is Ike sponsored by Booyah baits? I swear that is a Booyah A jig he was fishing with. Not that it matters if he is or isn't I was just wondering if he switch Jig sponsors to. Quote

Super User K_Mac Posted October 27, 2010 Super User Posted October 27, 2010 Ike is as enthusiastic with his hook-sets as he is in everything else he does. I've seen him (on TV) break at least two rods (I think three but can't say for sure). To say he is hard on rods would be understatement in my opinion. It is surprising he doesn't break more. Quote
Diablos Posted October 29, 2010 Posted October 29, 2010 I'm not trying to read into anything here but I get the feeling there is small percentage of people here that really want to hate any rods Abu puts out. Quote
GTrombly Posted October 29, 2010 Author Posted October 29, 2010 Maybe there are but not me i own some and plan on trying the veritas. Quote
ChrisAW Posted October 29, 2010 Posted October 29, 2010 I'm almost sure, from watching his TV show and his internet videos, that I've watched him snap atleast 6 rods on hooksets. And that is the first one I've seen him break now that he's switched to Abu from Daiwa. I don't know what rods he was using during those days though. If you watch the 6th Going Ike video, at 2:35 into it, you can see a good reason why he snapped the rod. His hooksets are going from a 10-11 0'clock position to straight back behind him at 3 o'clock. And he does the same thing repeatedly. Quote
Super User Shane J Posted October 29, 2010 Super User Posted October 29, 2010 He could be using $600 rods, and it wouldn't matter. He's rough on his equipment all the time. He probably breaks one every taping, but they don't show it. All these pros kinda take their stuff for granted and beat on it, most likely because it's given to them. Quote
Captain Obvious Posted October 29, 2010 Posted October 29, 2010 Also remember that when Ike was flipping with Daiwa he was using team Daiwa light and tough series. Not banging Daiwa but that series of rod has a very low quality blank. Not a bad rod but not up to par for its price. But low quality blank means its stronger than a steez which as we know has a very high quality blank. I bet if Ike was fishing with a Vendatte he would have not broken it. That is as long as it did not have any problems from being tossed around. Quote
AndrewVT Posted October 29, 2010 Posted October 29, 2010 It's real easy to treat expensive gear the way tournament pros do when it is given to them for free. The funniest thing I saw Ike do was on City Limit Fishing when he was fishing with a guide and lost a fish. He slammed the rod on the console and snapped it. Then he looked down and realized that he was using one of the guide's rods, not his own. I don't him breaking one has any reflection on the quality of the rod when used under normal circumstances. Super User Sam Posted October 30, 2010 Super User Posted October 30, 2010 The rod looks like a Veritas, not the new Verdict. The Veritas is white. The Verdict is silver. The Veritas costs $99. The Verdict $139. I may be incorrect but Ike's rod looks white to me. Quote

I may be incorrect but Ike's rod looks white to me. He was using both in the vid Sam but the one he broke was the Verdict. It really doesnt matter guys after using the Veritas since the release date I now have 4 of them and absolutely LOVE them. Very Happy ;D Quote
GTrombly Posted October 30, 2010 Author Posted October 30, 2010 I paused the video and saw Verdict right on the blank. Quote
TrippyJai Posted October 31, 2010 Posted October 31, 2010 I bet Ike breaks a lot of rods each year. From everything that I have read about him and seen in videos, he's just the type that doesn't seem to take care of his equipments. Swinging the big bass into the boat, hard hook sets, getting too excited, getting upset when losing a fish... I'm not surprised. Quote
