GTrombly Posted October 25, 2010 Posted October 25, 2010 If you watch going ike episode 5, he snaps his verdict rod setting the hook. Wonder if these are going to be any good. Quote

Super User J Francho Posted October 25, 2010 Super User Posted October 25, 2010 I've done in my fair share of rods the same way. Really, that type of fishing, and with that grass on Champ, is very abusive to gear. Quote
GTrombly Posted October 25, 2010 Author Posted October 25, 2010 you would think he would edit that part out to not hurt the rods image or sales. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted October 25, 2010 Posted October 25, 2010 Not only are those tough conditions as Jfrancho pointed out, these pros are way harder on equipment than most of us would be. They didn't show what Mike was doing but he may have high sticked that hook-set. There's also no way of telling how many times that rod was flung on the floor so he could grab another rig quickly. That all makes sense to some level if you're fishing for thousands of $, but not for most folks. The decision to not edit that out was probably made to emphasize Ike's "Wildman" persona. No one incident is indicative of a products quality anyway. Quote
Captain Obvious Posted October 25, 2010 Posted October 25, 2010 Kelly Jordan snapped a Boyd Duckett rod in WGFS. He hooked a huge fish and it snapped like a twig. I think we for get that higher quality blanks are not a strong as low quality blanks. If all you care about is durability then buy an Ugly Stick. Quote

Super User KYntucky Warmouth Posted October 26, 2010 Super User Posted October 26, 2010 If you could have seen the rods that were sold on eBay when he went to Abu. Some rods were "lightly used" and missing 1-4 guides in the middle of the rod. He is in no way easy on his equipment. Quote
GTrombly Posted October 26, 2010 Author Posted October 26, 2010 I saw them, it was crazy. I'm not saying he isn't hard on his equipment, I was just pointing out that he snapped a rod that is just about to come out. Quote

Ive handled a few verdicts and they feel very light and have a thin diameter blank. They do feel a bit more fragile than the vendetta or veritas but in a good way, I mean they should feel thinner at twice the price. It feels like a quality blank and doesn't feel full of resin like the vendetta. Quote
Nine Miler Posted October 26, 2010 Posted October 26, 2010 The vast, vast, vast majority of rod breakage (this well-known builder says 98%) is due to some abuse or improper handling by the angler. http://www.rodbuilding.org/library/rodusage.pdf Read this article and be careful how you store and transport your rods and it is unlikely you will ever break a rod, whether is a Wally-world unbreakable or a GLX. Yes, generally speaking- lighter, more sensitive rods made of high-modulus materials are more prone to breaking due to the nature of the material from which they are constructed. Quote
Super User Hooligan Posted October 26, 2010 Super User Posted October 26, 2010 More expensive rods are typically higher modulus, more sensitive, and of greater overall quality. What this translates to is that the user needs to be a lot more careful with the rod, they're not something that you can abuse and get away with like a cheaper rod. With almost every rod I've broken has come the realization that it wasn't the rod or blank's fault; it was my own. You don't leave a Diana Grade Superposed sitting in the duck blind all season and expect it to perform flawlessly, just like you don't leave an NRX sitting on the deck of the boat an entire season and expect it not to have issues. You take care of them, they typically last longer and will be worth the money in the long run. If you're going to abuse it, much like Ike, quick drop and grab another, slapping the deck with it, high-sticking hooksets and the like, well...expect the same durability that he's seeing out of his gear. Super User skunked_again Posted October 26, 2010 Super User Posted October 26, 2010 if you dont bust a rod once in a while...........youre not fishing enough. big fish in the matts, being horsed, im not shocked the rod busted. Quote
Nine Miler Posted October 26, 2010 Posted October 26, 2010 if you dont bust a rod once in a while...........youre not fishing enough. I disagree. If you exercise proper technique, you shouldn't break rods fishing. Not on a bass, anyway- even with braid. We do all kind of crazy stuff to rods, then bash the companies because they don't give us a warranty replacement. When the company does give us a warranty replacement for our own carelessness, we gripe and say the rods are too expensive. Go figure. Quote
Simp Posted October 26, 2010 Posted October 26, 2010 I broke 4 rods this year and only one I would say was my fault. St Croix took care of me and replaced one in warranty rod and the other out of warranty rod was replaced for a small fee. I have a Carrot Stix I need to replace but I'm not happy about spending 50$ for a in warranty repair! It was just a crazy year for my rods when I'd never broke a rod before this year. Quote
Jason Penn Posted October 26, 2010 Posted October 26, 2010 I'm having more problems with the porno moustache than I am the broken rod! Quote
Nine Miler Posted October 26, 2010 Posted October 26, 2010 Simp, its hard to tell if it is your fault without a description of the events and an exam of the break. Sometimes large companies will cover your mistakes to avoid bad press on sites like this. Quote
Uncle Leo Posted October 26, 2010 Posted October 26, 2010 If you ever paid attention to how Ike treats his equipment it is no wonder it broke. Not saying that a manufacturing defect could not happen but I believe if you take care of your equipment it will last. I have broken two rods in my lifetime. One in a tailgate, my fault (Ala Bill Dance) and one on a hook-set, again my fault. The line (Braid) was lying over the tip when I set the hook. No good. Quote
Super User SoFlaBassAddict Posted October 26, 2010 Super User Posted October 26, 2010 I don't agree with the Skunked's post about breaking rods. I've never broken a rod on a hook set, fresh or salt. I do some type of fishing every day of the year. The only times I've broken a rod have been from stupid human error. Fan, car door, tailgate, etc etc. That stuff he was fishing didn't look that thick. You can see thicker grass than that down here on a regular basis. Quote

Super User BASSclary Posted October 26, 2010 Super User Posted October 26, 2010 Does the fish in the top-left photo have a googly-eye stuck on it ? Quote
garry77 Posted October 26, 2010 Posted October 26, 2010 Hard to tell with 3 fishermen and a camera guy in the boat how many times that rod may have been stepped on before he used it. Quote
