lightsout Posted October 22, 2010 Posted October 22, 2010 I read years ago a qoute from KVD that he used silicone spray on his line and reels. A few years go by and products like line and lure are on the market. I have an aerosol can of this spray and it does make things a lot slicker after spraying it. Has anyone used it on their reels? Seems like a cheaper alternative. Quote
Super User SPEEDBEAD. Posted October 22, 2010 Super User Posted October 22, 2010 KVD Line and Lure is all I use on my lines. IMO, it is cheap and helps with manageability. Quote
lightsout Posted October 22, 2010 Author Posted October 22, 2010 Yeah me too it's a good product, I'm pretty much out of the L+L and was just wondering if it was worth trying out. If there was no real diffrence between the 100% silicone and L+L then why not? Hunting season is here and the fishing budget is pretty low 8-), so every little bit helps. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted October 22, 2010 Super User Posted October 22, 2010 There's a pretty big difference between silicone spray and L&L. Quote

Delaware Valley Tackle Posted October 22, 2010 Posted October 22, 2010 Silicone spray (WD40, Reel Magic...) actually slightly degrades mono. That's why it relaxes the memory and makes the line easier to manage to some degree. They use a petroleum distilate to thin the oil to make it spray. I would not let these sprays anywhere need bearings the inside of a reel. From what I understand, KVD Line & Lure coat the line and bond with it to enhance managability. Quote
Super User .RM. Posted October 22, 2010 Super User Posted October 22, 2010 Has anyone used it on their reels? Seems like a cheaper alternative.Might seem that way now, but in the long run it will eventually cost you to have the reel serviced and lubricated properly.... Delaware Valley Tackle... I would not let these sprays anywhere near bearings or the inside of a reel. None of them! Tight Lines! Quote
Super User bilgerat Posted October 22, 2010 Super User Posted October 22, 2010 I was highly skeptical of L&L. I started having some casting difficulties with my Revo spooled with Sufix Siege due to the line coiling. I cast it out in the yard, sprayed the spool, reel in a bit, repeat until done. Gave the spool one more soak and let the rig sit overnight. I gotta say it worked way beyond my expectations. Quote

backwater4 Posted October 23, 2010 Posted October 23, 2010 I've used reel magic for a while. Didn't really seem to make a difference. I did have a non boater in a tournament spray his lures with WD40, like it was attractant. He did catch a few. Quote

Super User QUAKEnSHAKE Posted October 23, 2010 Super User Posted October 23, 2010 I use ReelMagic with my spincast & underspincast reels that have powerpro and it makes quite a noticeable difference in casting ease-distance. Without the spray the coating on the line would build-up on the catch pins then cause sticking. One quick spray every few outings does the trick. Dont use it on my baitcasters or spinning reels though or for lube of bearings. Quote
Chuck H. Posted October 25, 2010 Posted October 25, 2010 Line and Lure is a water based polymer that bonds to your line as stated previously. Most other products are petroleum based and only coat the line. If you use them on your line and put the line in the water, you can see a "slick" on the water from the coating coming off. Not only does L&L bond to the line, it will not harm your reels or the environment. It is very high in UV protection and because it bonds to the line, the polymer coating wears before your line does, which increases the longevity of your line. Quote
lightsout Posted October 25, 2010 Author Posted October 25, 2010 I did a little more research, and after looking at some MSDS's it appears some silicone sprays could have a use (adhere to nylon type products (line) , repel water, enviro friendly, reduce binding and memory, etc.) KVD doesnt specify in his book which one he used, so who knows? Others make me nervous to use at all, lol. There really is a big diffrence and a good reminder to know what chemicals your using. DVT-- I discovered that alot of sprays actually have acetone in them, which is what degrades line, paint, etc. Quote
dave Posted October 25, 2010 Posted October 25, 2010 WD40 is a petroleum based solvent / penetrator. Not really a lubricant. Quote
Rob Faddis Posted October 25, 2010 Posted October 25, 2010 From the horses mouth. KVD did mention that he used silicone oil spray in his first book. The printing of the book was years before his development of Line & Lure. L&L came about because of fluorocarbon line. Silicone spray had (has) no appreciable benefit on Fluoro and KVD was seeking a way to tame the wiriness and reduce the nicking problems of this type of line. Almost 2 years of development was put into L&L focusing on ultimate line benefit and reel protection for not only for Fluoro, but for all types of line. L&L benefits have been proven for years by anglers like you as so many have stated here. When L&L is applied as directed, we find that it is the most durable, cost effective, line improving product on the market. We hope you feel so as well. Thanks to all of you that use KVD Line & Lure and those of you that have reported your satisfaction here. Quote
lightsout Posted October 25, 2010 Author Posted October 25, 2010 Thanks rob! You make a fine product for sure. How does line and lure do on braid? Quote
Rob Faddis Posted October 25, 2010 Posted October 25, 2010 I find as much if not more benefit with L&L on braid. It keeps the line from "feathering" as quickly and it just lasts a lot longer then without using L&L. I also find that wind knots and line bury rarely happen when braid is treated L&L. Quote
Super User bilgerat Posted October 26, 2010 Super User Posted October 26, 2010 WD40 is a petroleum based solvent / penetrator. Not really a lubricant. Correct. The "WD" stands for water displacement. It's fine for it's intended purposes, but it's a poor lubricant. Quote
Super User Hammer 4 Posted October 27, 2010 Super User Posted October 27, 2010 First off, I've been using KVD L&L for awhile. At the last Fred Hall show in Long Beach, I stopped by the Yozuri booth, cuz I use their ultrasoft line. So I asked one of the guys, if there was any benefit using L&L on their line, the only word he spoke was a matter of fact NO..it doesn't do anything. Having heard that, I stopped using L&L for awhile on the Yozuri, and to my surprise, the line was just as managble w/o the L&L. Being a copoly line, does the L&L penetrate it, or just coat it..? L&L will bond to , not just coat, whatever type of line it is used on. It was developed specifically for the problems associated with flourocarbon and braid, although it will help with the manageability of many other types of line. It's very good in helping with the problems of using any type of line on spinning reels. Quote
MikeinFresno Posted October 29, 2010 Posted October 29, 2010 just got some KVD local, $9+ for small bottle. Cant wait to try it on some line Im having difficulty with. Glad i read this thread since i was about to use Real magic on it. Quote
tjmaniac Posted October 29, 2010 Posted October 29, 2010 i have been having major casting problems with stren microfuse line. it seems to stick together and knot up real easily. i can undo the knots just by manually pulling the line out and then rewinding but on the next cast it does exactly the same thing. would the l+l help this problem or is there something else i should try? thanks Quote

tjmaniac Posted October 29, 2010 Posted October 29, 2010 definitely, my first thought was to go home and change lines but it's brand new, just put it on last week and if i can solve the problem with a line treatment isn't it worth a try? Quote
