I have never felt as dumb as I did today. I had gotten to my breaking point with my almost new Curado's. I was in the process of packing up my reels to send off to the Shimano Warranty Center in Ca. These reels have made a strange noise since day one. It sounded like the spool was grinding and sloppy. I lubed them once but that didn't help. Just before sealing up the box I did a search on BR and found a post where forum member "Bantam" said the noise may be caused by a loose Cast Controll. Huh? Couldn't be that simple! Tightened up the Cast Controll knob and made a few cast.....no grinding, no slop in the spool. I can't believe it was that simple. Thanks to the power of the forum and "Bantam" I save the expense and time of sending my reels out to Ca.

JFYI..When I bought my 301E, it worked pretty well, right out of the box. I used in the salt one day, and it felt a tad...rough, so I took it to the local tackle shop, and had them clean, and replace the drags with carbontex.

I was pleasantly surprised how much better it casted after the cleaning..Maybe Shimano packs them with to much grease or something..?

I have something similar going on, but mine went from a very smooth cast control adjustment to an almost on / off adjustment.  I've only used the reel 8 - 10 outings and on the last few it seems like the cast control knob either lets the lure drop and run line off the spool, or not let the lure drop at all.  It used to vary the drop to the point where I could definitely "fine tune" the spool for the lure weight.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Having similar problems. I purchased 12 now Curado E7s , sent 4 back, and have another 2 doing the same problem now as well. The 4 that came back were fixed, but now with 2 more doing it, man it's a lot!

Wish my problem was as easy as tightening the casting control!

Nope, never pin pointed the exact problem, one of them they replaced the bearings, others just cleaned them up.. The one that was really bad I'm assuming is the one they replaced the bearings.

Make sure that all the shims in the cast control cap are in place and that the brass shim isn't dimpled from over tightening.

Took the cast control cap off.  Shims (if that's what I was looking at) were inside the cap and didn't look like they would come out unless I used a small, sharp implement.  The spring seemed somehow attached to the bearing or the side cover as it wouldn't just fall out and with a little pulling pressure it didn't budge so I didn't want to force anything.  Put the cap back on and it seems to be working better now.

Should the shims have come out (aka - fallen out) and should the spring feel like it's attached to the bearing or the case?  Lastly - what ultimately does the cast control adjustment put pressure on that (I assume) puts pressure on the spool to slow it down?

The shims should be lightly lubed which will hold them in place but they do get lost. If you look at the bearing under the cast control you will see the end of the spool shaft where it comes through. The cast control applies pressure against the end of the spool to slow it down. If the shim stack isn't right, proper adjustment becomes difficult if not impossible.
