The longer the rod the farther you can cast.

With a treble hook you can outcast your hook setting power.

If you are using mono there is stretch so you will need a medium heavy to heavy rod to set the hook. I use either a 6'6" or a 7' medium heavy rod when fishing lipless cranks and rats.

So don't worry about how far you can cast the lipless crankbait.  Concentrate on throwing the bait about 30 to 40 yards so you can get a good hookset when you sweep the rod to the left or right when setting the hook.

I have outcasted my hook setting power many times and still can see those darn bass jumping and throwing my Chatterbaits and Rat-L-Traps. Totally my fault.

Good luck and let us know how you do.  :)

I toss  my lipless cranks on a 6'9" MH fast Kistler Mag TS rod,  a 6.2:1 reel w/30ln braid when I am fishing it over/through grass, and on a 7' M fast St Croix LT, same speed reel, and 12lb fluorocarbon in more open water areas. I never liked a slow speed reel for traps, it's easier for me to slow down a fast reel in cold water to keep the bait where I want it, than to speed up a slow one when it needs to be burned. :)

I'm gonna have to agree...you need a faster reel and I like a 7ft rod for lipless baits.  Its enough to pick up line to set the hook, but not too much to outcast your hook setting distance.  Also, I recommend braid on lipless bait, so i like my rod to give.  Powell makes a Spook/Trap rod...may be something to look into. :)

I'd suggest a Med or MedHvy/ Fast action rod of 7' for lip less cranks paired with a 6.1:1 ratio reel. The faster action will come in handy when ripping weeds. I like the length more for yo-yo type retrieves than casting distance. The faster reel is easier to vary retrieves from slow roll to burning. Save the Mod action/slow ratio combo for deep diving cranks.

I agree witht he 7' m or mh fast rod in order rip cranks through grass and weeds.  I also agree on the faster gear ratio for lipless cranks.  In high grass, I found myself cranking too d**n fast with my 5.1 when I tried it for lipless cranks.
