power pro question

hey guys. I'm running a quantum accurist pt. In the paperwork it says that the spool can hold 125 yards of 12lb mono. I put 65lb powerpro braid on there that says it's 16lb mono equiv. I have 2 or so layers of 12lb mono under the power pro. I think there's probably 45 yards of powerpro. My question is, should the power pro be fine, and how much line do I actually need on the reel for casting do you think? Normally I use mono and just spool it up this is the first year of using braid.

Line diameters on mono vary from manufacturer to manufacturer depending on lb test.  As a result your actual capacity will vary as well.

65 PP is supposed to be 15lb dia?

You should have enough line.

I wish line manufacturers would go to a more uniform system to rate their lines.  Line diameter would be IDEAL.

I know that, but if they gave the actual breaking strength for the actual line diameter, it would make more sense to me than marketing a 15 lb line that breaks at 25+.

Even if you knew that, it wouldn't tell if its the RIGHT line for you.  You simply have to try it.  Line choice is VERY subjective.  What works for me feels like poop in someone else' hands.

Of course I would have to try it to see if it's the right line for me.  Just like everything else in the world...

Yes, but will they have the qualities in a line that I'm looking for? Abrasion resistance, stretch, no stretch? Like you said, each individual has to find the line that they prefer. Will you go with a line just because it has such and such quality typed on the package, or because someone says they love it? You may or may not, but actual line capacity is the original posters question.

And you can pretty much start with 10 lb. line.  Most companies' "10# line" is around .010 to .014" in diameter.  In order to have a standardized "break strength measurement," there would have to be a standardized test for it.  Along with that would have to be a standards organization, like ISO, to audit such test results.  All this would contribute a lot to the bottom line.  If you want to know where line breaks, tie it to a scale, and measure it.

Your farthest casting distance x 2 = How much PowerPro you need. Also make sure to get enough backing on to make sure your reel is properly spooled.

75 yards is all takes.  Get four reel fills per 300 yd. spool.

I have tied on a piece/pieces of lead that are 1/4 to 1/2oz heavier than anything I'll be throwing, chunked it as high and long as I could, and when it landed walked backwards ten or fifteen yards. If you still have line, you've got more than enough.

An average good cast is 70 FEET, not yards.  If you're Mr Wonderful, you may get out to 100-110 ft (~35 yds).   Double that because you will be losing line as you trim it when tying on lures - and you get about 75 yards max needed.  You could split a 150 yd filler spool in half and use it on 2 reels.  That said, I spool up a whole filler spool of braid (usually 150 yards) because I don't want to end up with 2 short pieces that have to be knotted together.  Since braid lasts indefinitely, I think using the whole spool on one reel is the best strategy.

I should have just taken off the 12lb backing and put some electrical tape and gotten the most out of it. Oh well, next season i plan on buying #50 and #20 powerpro for my spinning and baitcasting reels. Hopefully it lasts all season.

You didn't do anything wrong (my opinion) I do what you have done many times. 45 yds is 135 ft. I usually go a little more, but I think you'll be fine.

as long as it lasts me the rest of the season i dont care! i think the maximum cast i do with my heavy lures is about as much braid as i have on there lol. but i also don't cast as far with my baitcaster as i do with my spinning gear.

I think you are over thinking this line biz, just go fish.

Update: Went out and bought some 50# powerpro at walmart (150 yds) for my baitcaster which holds 125 yds of 12lb mono. And i bought 6lb spiderwire supermono ez for my spinning rod. The fireline original fused stuff sucks on the spinning rod.

love it. ive used it this whole season and its strong, cheap & doesnt have much memory. i have it on 2/3 poles.
