im not sure if this is the right place to put it but if its not then it will be moved i guess.

tuesday i will be getting contact lenses and then i figured i'd go over to walmart and use that $20 walmart card i got for christmas. well since i dont have any sunglasses i figured i'd need some since i will have contacts.

what are a good pair i could get for $20 or a little (up to 15) more?

thanks for the help guys, i know VERY little about sunglasses.

walmart doesn't have very expensive sunglasses. if you go to the fishing section they usually have Renegade (which i think is the wally world store brand), Strike King and maybe a few other brands. i bought two pairs for like 15-20 bucks last time i bought some and they've done me well so far. the best part is for that cheap i don't mind when they get scratched or broken.

yeah i've seen their selection of sunglasses and its not much. only about 1 rack and its not always full.

i figured there wont be much selection and 30 bucks would probably be the most expensive pair there. anybody ever used the B.A.S.S. brand sunglasses? they seem like the best in the 30 dollar range. anybody ever seen them at walmart?

A good tip to see how effective polarized sunglasses are is you get 2 of the same pair and have 1 pair like ---- and the other pair like | when they are in front of each other like a cross if you try to look through them you will not be able to. The less you can see the better!

thats interesting. where did you hear that method? also, when you are crossing them, do you put the outsides against each other or do you put the insides against each other or do you put the outside against the inside of the other?

A fisherman named Glen taught me this at my local Dicks Sporting Goods.

I am not good at explaining things so I will draw you a picture.

Pretty much you take a pair of the same brand polorized sunglasses and put one horizontally and one vertical. Keep them face forward as if they were on your face. The less you can see through the better they are because the lines are closer together blocking out more glare (Or atleast  I think so)

I bought a pair of solar bats for around $15 bucks at wally world. You can see through the water great but I also have electrical tape holding both the arms on now as they broke easily.I figure it won't be long till I accidenatlly drop them in like the last 50 pairs I've lost, lol.

I always lose sunglasses. I especially had trouble with glasses falling off of my head into the lake. Finally the kids bought me some floating sunglasses from Wally World and they worked great.

P.S. I thought the title of this post was funny. I can't remember my "First tme buying sunglasses" but I've probably bought over 100 pairs in my life, never spending more than $20.

Whatever you get, for the sake of your eyes, make sure the glasses offer 100% UV protection.

solar bats for $15????? the cheapest solar bats ive seen were 40 and they were the unpolarized ones. are you sure they were solar bats and not some other kind?

RE: blocking of the light, that is what polarizing lenses do.  The only allow wavelenths of light in one plane to pass through the lens.  This is what reduces glare off the water and allows you to see the stuff under the water.  The coating of the lenses only allows the wavelengths in the vertical plane to pass through.  This technology was developed by polaroid, hence the name.

If you hold two pair of polarized sunglasses one right behind the other you will be able to see through them both very easily.  Start to rotate one of them as the angle approaches 90 degrees you will be able to see less and less.  In reality the cheapest of polarzing glasses should show this 'effect'

Dave,

Has this been your problem on why you are not catching more fish?  You can't see? ;D

May I suggest getting one of those straps that hold the sunglasses on your head?  They will prevent them from falling off.

Wal-Mart sells them and so do other sporting goods stores. Excellent investment.

Just walk in and tell the lady in the lady in the sporting goods department that you need a strap and see what happens.   :P

Remember, this is a cloth band that holds the glasses on your face.

And remember to take them off when you send in your pictures.

Just something to consider; From my optiton INSIGHT OPTICAL in Brooklyn, Dr.Gil: He told me not to go cheap, the better the lens, glass preferablly , the better the refraction. Polarization need not mean you see less but that the lens coating is designed to blook out the frequencies of light that we call glare. Ceaper plastic lens have many distortions in the lens, more expensive plastic and glass lens do not have these distortions and the refraction of light is better on your eyes.

That being said: I am going to get the old fashioned Pair of Ray Bans and rock the Blues Brother Look on the water this year

I have the solar bats and renegades from Walmart, but now I have Maui Jims, they are higher priced, but worth it. The lenses are polarized on both sides, so when you get the sun coming into your glasses from behind you, you are not blinded. For all you guys losing glasses, get straps. They are very cheap and can save you the aggravation.

just came back from walmart. i ended up with the most expensive pair they had, a 18.87 dollar pair of poly carbonate renegades. says its 1.1mm thick polycarbonate lenses w/ scratch resistance stuff and 100% UV and UBA protection, and theyre polarized and the lenses are grey.

That should do you fine, I  ha the strike king version of those for te last 3 years. They are scratrch reistant for anyone not named Muddy, I manadge to run a Bomber *A over em and the back treble gouged em, nothing to do with the glasses,

I picked up a pair of DH2's from Walmart for $15 and they work beautifully.  I am going to buy a more expensive pair for tournaments and stuff where vision is really key, but for practice fishing they work awesome.  They even have vents on the sides to help circulate air and stop them from fogging.

One of the most important pieces of fishing equipment is a quality pair of POLARIZED sunglasses. I bought a pair of those Renegades at Walmart they hurt so much I got rid of them, and they didn't work. I'll shop bargain where ever I can, but buy lures with the Walmart card and get a pair of Oakleys. Look for an Oakley Vault. They have clearence in the $80.00 range. I splurged in this case. Well worth the money. Most guys wouldn't think twice about spending $100.00 on a reel???? Good luck!

A buddy of mine buys 8 pack tubes of polarized protective sunglasses from Sam's Club and sometimes Granger.  I think they cost him around $20-$30 a pack.  He loses them all the time plus he gives them to employess who work out side cutting grass.  I thought they would be cheap but they are actually pretty well made for a $3-$4 pair of sunglasses.

Great illustration of the glasses!

Think of them as levolure (sp?) blinds.  They are blocking any light coming up.  If you take two pair of levolure blings and cross them at 90 degrees like the illustration then is should be dark/black.

You can really see the difference in quality when you do this.  Some will be totally black some will be patchy some will be darker but not black.

I'd like to echo something already said:

"you'd spend $100 on a reel but $20 on sunglasses?"

FORGET about being able to see into the water for a minute.

Good polarized glasses PROTECT your eyes from very harmful sunlight and IMHO that is the most important function of sunglasses. The cheap ones in no way compare to quality polarized sunglasses.

A pair of good quality polarized sunglasses can be had for less than $100.

As I see it, why spend the money on cheap ones that may work to help you see into the water but do not protect your eyes properly.

Spend a little more on good sunglasses, your eyes will thank you.

I'd buy them and give them to people I didn't like!
