Been using a buddy's 50mg awhile and finally sprung for one.  I thought I'd throw out the question for all the gurus.

What are the best tricks to setting this reel up?  I've looked inside and saw the mags, (3 up, 3 down).

I intend for this to be used for casting lightweight stuff.  Not sure yet if I'll put it on another AVC70MM for light cranks, or use it on an XF rod for plastics.

My other reels are REVO STX's, and BPS JM Sig series.  They all have dual braking and are relatively easy (for me) to setup.

How's the ch50mg gonna be different?

No issues...2 on, four off. Cast control basically off, just

enough to prevent "wiggle". This will either be your favorite

reel or one of them!

I have mine mounted on a Dobyns 683C, but previously on a

MBR842C. Medium Light to Medium Power is the point. This is

a great reel for weightless soft plastics and medium weight

hard lures.

I currently have mine mounted on a MBR782C GLX and toss topwater poppers or small rapala xr8 jerkbaits with it. Also have boca abec7's & carbontex drags installed. Great little finesse reel.

I reckon the difference is that the Chronarch does not have magnetic brakes but centrifugal brakes, exclusively if I am not mistaken.

Most people gravitate toward 3 brakes off and 3 brakes on, or 4 off and 2 on. I prefer the latter for most scenarios.

open up the turnkey dial...2 brakes on, 4 off...then snug-fit the dial back on...don't vise-grip it down...loosen the cast control until the spool quits rocking...will smooth out the reel under heavier loads.

great little reel...easily, one of shimano's best efforts and perfect on the mbr782 or bcr803.

Stock Chronarch 50 Mg + GLoomis CR722 IMX + 8 lbs Pline CXX/Yozuri Hybrid----> match made in heaven for lighter baits

Stock Chronarch 50 Mg + Citica 100 DSV spool + GLoomis CR723 IMX + 10/12 Pline CXX/ Yozuri Hybrid ----> match made in heaven for the more heavier stuff

Setting for the lighter stuff --> 2 on, 4 off

Setting for the  more heavier stuff ---> 3 on, 3 off

Spool tension ---> that depends on how educated your thumb is, I like RW apply very little tension, just enough to deter the spool from moving sideways.

RW,  Being the St. Croix guy that you are, I'm a little surprised that you didn't recommend an AVC70MM.  ;)

Also, who's the guy to send it to to get cleaned and upgraded with all the trick drag washers and bearings, and maybe even supertuned?

I have 5 (five) 50mgs on a variety of rods that I throw everything in my box with. If you keep practicing, you will eventually turn off all the brakes. Just use the cast control knob to the weight of the lure. These reels are amazing. JMHO

Exactly.  Like all my shimano's,  2 on 4 off.

I love my chr. mg and will prob. purchase another before the new 50e.  I used to use mine for cranks,  but now I flip w/ it.  IMO I don't think theres anything it doesn't excell at.
