Chris W. Posted August 30, 2010 Posted August 30, 2010 Ok. First question. My 2001 quantum accurist pt has a drilled out spool, but the holes don't go all the way through. Will this be suffecient for tying braid to, or do I need a monofiliment backing? Question number two deals with line more specifically. I just got #20 berkley fireline which has a diameter od 0.30mm. My reel is recommended to use #12, which I have in berkley big game and has a diameter of 0.36mm. The big game works fine, but I want to spool up braid at some point after I teach my brother and girlfriend on it, or spool it up and use it, but that's being debated in another thread. Will the 0.06mm make a huge difference as far as the line digging into itself on the spool and stuff? I don't have any money to buy new braid, so I'm asking if it's a go or no go, in which case I'll just spool up my spinning reel with it. I created this thread to be more specific and to keep on topic with my other one, hope it doesn't rub anyone the wrong way. Quote
Super User Raul Posted August 30, 2010 Super User Posted August 30, 2010 Backing is a must when spooling braided line to avoid line slipping and digging in, line slippage causes "ghost drag". Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted August 30, 2010 Super User Posted August 30, 2010 Mono or copolymer backing saves money, too! You don't need more than two casting lengths of braid. Tie something on and cast it out in your yard. Walk to the lure releasing line and cut it off. Add braid at that point. I use a Blood Knot to connect the lines because it is small, but anything will do. 8-) Quote
Chris W. Posted August 30, 2010 Author Posted August 30, 2010 What about the line size difference? The size difference in inches is 0.0024 or 0.06mm. Is that a big enough difference to cause issues? The mono works well, but i want to switch over to braid and was told its easier for beginners, of which i'm trying to teach. Here's my two, first is my mono, second is the line i just got. I have 1175 yds of clear mono, and 125 yds of smoke braid. Quote
Super User BASSclary Posted August 30, 2010 Super User Posted August 30, 2010 IMO that difference is just too small to humanly notice any effects. Quote
Chris W. Posted August 30, 2010 Author Posted August 30, 2010 Is a blood knot also called a uni to uni? I looked at it and it looks similar. I usually tie an albright, is it smaller than a well tied albright? Also, i was told on here to stick with the 12lb mono because the braid would lie into itself, i'm not disagreeing with you, because an agreement would be good lol, just reiterating what others have said. Super User BASSclary Posted August 30, 2010 Super User Posted August 30, 2010 Oh I thought we were talking castability ;D whoops ! Well by nature braid has more a tendency to dig in than other lines (Atleast when I use it) but It may be me but i've never had a backlash or anything due to "dig in". Mono almost never lies into itself but I don't think you'll really notice any dig in the braid unless your using weightless worms, were the line will spool on "mushy" which in my mind is where the dig in effects really shine. Edit: And when tying on briad to (inset line here) I always use an Alberto knot Quote
Chris W. Posted August 30, 2010 Author Posted August 30, 2010 So, I should be safe to use the braid? My issue is, i don't want to spool it onto my baitcaster, then have issues with it on the water and have it ruin my day, then have to unspool it and possibly make a mess so i can't use it on another reel and have to throw it. Know what im sayin? Quote
Super User BASSclary Posted August 30, 2010 Super User Posted August 30, 2010 It happens I say spool up the braid and make sure its good to go, and bring the mono just incase they backlash your braid so bad you have to chainsaw it off Quote
Chris W. Posted August 30, 2010 Author Posted August 30, 2010 Haha i could do that, but it would be a waste of both braid and money. And i dont have more money to spend :-) as it is the braid was a gift. So if it wont work on my BC i'll put it on my spinning gear. Quote
rubba bubba Posted August 30, 2010 Posted August 30, 2010 20 lbs is a little on the light side based on line diameter but it will work. I have fished with as low as 10lbs. If you're good with a BC you'll be able to make it work, but you'll probably experience a dig-in problem every now and then. If you're inexperienced with a BC, it will still work, you'll just need to practice. Quote

rubba bubba Posted August 30, 2010 Posted August 30, 2010 I meant I've fished with as low as 10lbs braid (on a baitcaster) which had the equivalent of 2lbs mono and it worked. Had a different feel that you had to get used to but no big deal. Now I don't bother - I use 30lbs braid and tie on whatever size fluoro leader I need for those times where light line is critical. Chris W. Posted August 30, 2010 Author Posted August 30, 2010 so is that a go or no go? Like I said I'd love to use it but if it's not kosher I won't. I don't want to waste it, but have no money to buy more. Quote

Chris W. Posted August 31, 2010 Author Posted August 31, 2010 If they recommend 12lb, is it all right to go down to "8" lb? It just lists 12lb in the guide they put with the reel. Quote
Super User BASSclary Posted August 31, 2010 Super User Posted August 31, 2010 I wouldn't worry about it Quote
Chris W. Posted August 31, 2010 Author Posted August 31, 2010 I put it on and love it. Time to teach! I can cast just as far as my spinning reel with that stuff. It's great. Quote
