I've read alot about heavier applications for braid, but not so much for light stuff. I'm looking to replace my 8 and 10lb mono outfits w/ say a 20/6 braid. I'd like to use these for finesse worms and jigs, senkos, grubs, etc. What are your thoughts? Leader, no leader. good choice or bad? Not sure if I'm going to do it yet, but I go through mono like no tomorrow and fiqure I can savr some money in the long run. I don't want to sacrifice fish though.

Sufix Performance braid does very well on spinning gear. Personally I use a leader, but that is my preference. If you fish clear or rocky water, you should use a leader.

If you make the switch, be sure to put a layer of backing on the spool first (mono or tape) or else the braid will spin around the spool.

I use 20lb braid on one of my spinning reels.  Works fantastic.

I have 13 spinning rigs with braid on them. Nothing less than 6# mono equivalent diameter and most are 8# mono equivalent diameter braids.

I use some of the same and some heavier superlines on some baitcasting rigs.

Using a leader depends on the presentation. Mostly I use 20# fluorocarbon for weight to make the braid sink for weightless presentations. A leader is not necessary unless abrasion with rocks or concrete is a concern. In some waters, barnacles and Zebra Mussels are a problem with braids and a leader is preferred.

Sounds good, I'm going to try a couple of setups. Thanks for the tips. Any specific kind?

Thanks.

Everything that's been said, plus

Daiwa Samurai (I use 30/6). Casts great, doesn't dig in, and insanely sensitive. A bit pricey, but one spool lasts forever when you use a leader. Works out in the long run IMO.

That's what I'm thinking. I respool(?) every 3 trips. I'm constantly cutting back line and retying.

I use Sufix braid 10 and 20 on my spinning reels.  Not only will you see a difference in sesitivity and longevity, but you'll see a huge reduction in line twist.

Also, after you close the bail, give the line a small tug to make sure that any loose coils of line are pulled snug to the spool to avoid those nasty snarls on your next cast.  It becomes second nature after a while.

I have spinning rigs with everything from 3/8 Fireline (long casts with grubs in open water) to 8/30 Suffix.

I use leaders most of the time.

I haven't found one braid (or fused, like Fireline) I hate, but sometimes one will work better on a particular reel than another. I will say that one superline most folks can get to work for them on spinning gear is PowerPro, although it it's not really my favorite. Both it and Fireline work better after you've used them a trip or two, so if you spool up up with either of them remember that. Also, Fireline and PowerPro are good one to use a blood knot to tie your leader on with, but the other are better with an Alberto or back-to-back Uni.

Andre Moore (think Smallie Beaver) ties fluoro leaders on to his 2/10 Spiderwire with a blood knot, and I don't know how he does it, because I can't get it to work. I told him I think he has three thumbs. ;)

Thanks for all the info. I'm definiitely going to switch over and use the leader. I'll probably go with the Power Pro, I use on my saltwater stuff, but nothing that thin.

That tug on the line trick is the way to go. I do it with all my spinning reels and it definitely becomes second nature.

I love braid on my spinning reels. I use 20lb samurai with an 6 or 8lb leader. It greatly increases the performance and cuts down on line twists. Also you don't have to replace line very often. I respool maybe twice a year at the most. Just money go through leader material. Try it out, I think you'll really like it. 8-)

+1, only difference is I use Fireline fused (I guess it's kinda like braid?).  Sensitivity and casting distance GREATLY improved! ;)

I use braid on almost all my spinning reels. Only reel I use mono on is for trout fishing on the river.

Ive used 5# Power Pro and 6# Sufix braid on my 2500 CI4 with no problems or wind knots. Just in the last couple of fishing trips have I had problems with breakage but I can pin point it to Knots with the leader that I didnt double the braid with. Ive pulled out 8lb. Snook with the Sufix and horsed them alot considering the test of the line.

I use about 1/2 a spool of cheap mono backing, then braid and leaders where necessary. When the braid starts getting beat up I transfer it onto another reel and use the opposite end. Braid handles graet ona spinning reel and is super sensitive.

I prefer to use fused line such as fireline on spinning outfits , it doesn't seem to be as limp as braided line. I like to use 10# with a 8# floro leader when fishing small spider jigs . Heck I even use 6# fireline on the rare ocassion that I go for trout in a small stream. The stuff is awesome!

What size fish have you caught with the 5#PP?

I have 8# & 10# PP and 20# Suffix performance braid the Suffix has a bit more noise to it but still fine.

Thinking of the 5#PP for UL rod/reel set-up.

The spinning rigs I use the most are both 6'6" mh/fast.

One has 20# Power Pro with a 15# floro leader and the other 20#.

I just respooled another with 12# Yo Zuri on my 7' med/fast for cranks and jerk's.

[Never used it before. I have a tourn next Sunday on the Big O so we'll see.]

I'm fishing TufLine XP in 15/4 on a CI4. I've grown to love it for dragging tubes and other finesse applications because of its soft delivery and ease of use. I like it so far, will probably continue to use it.

I use braid for everything from Bluegills, to Sturgeon. I prefer TUF-Line XP, but most true braided lines are all fine.

I hate fused lines though. Stiff, crinkly garbage, with the consistency of dental floss. It gets a little bit better by the time it's almost worn out (when it starts to get fluffy ? ....uh... if you don't mind 'fluffy' fishing line !)

Oh, and yes, I always use a mono leader, connected with a blood knot.

Peace,

Fish
