philsoreel Posted August 27, 2010 Posted August 27, 2010 I keep having to tighten up the reel seat on my Dobyns. My rods are never treated poorly, not subjected to any kind of vibration. I had to tighten it twice in one hour the other day...never had this problem with any other reel seat. Anyone else had this problem? Quote
Super User David P Posted August 27, 2010 Super User Posted August 27, 2010 I can honestly say I haven't had this issue with the numerous rods I have. Give it a real good tighten next time out and see if it does it again now that you're paying attention. If it persists, give them a call and they'll help get it sorted out. Great customer service. Super User KYntucky Warmouth Posted August 27, 2010 Super User Posted August 27, 2010 I've used to have the same problem on another rod that had an ECS reelseat. I found out that I wasn't tightening it enough, it just needed a good tightening. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted August 27, 2010 Posted August 27, 2010 I sometimes put a wrap of teflon tape around the threads of a seat to keep it from backing off. Quote
philsoreel Posted August 28, 2010 Author Posted August 28, 2010 Well, I'm not a Crimson Tide Offensive Line sized guy but I have a decent grip. Yes, I have tightened it as tight as I can without putting the old vise-grips on her. Maybe it has become a non-issue....it gave me no problems today. We'll see. Maybe it just needed to be broken in. philsoreel Posted August 28, 2010 Author Posted August 28, 2010 I'm so ready to sing some Rammer Jammer! Probably won't be singing it 14 times this year but we'll be just fine. Roll Tide! Quote
Stasher1 Posted August 28, 2010 Posted August 28, 2010 I sometimes put a wrap of teflon tape around the threads of a seat to keep it from backing off. This. It's a fairly common problem with some reel seats. I've gotten to the point where I do it to every spinning rod I set up. Better safe than sorry. Quote
philsoreel Posted August 28, 2010 Author Posted August 28, 2010 I think it was just a high spot on the threads or something because it stayed tight all day yesterday and this morning. I caught sixteen on it yesterday and seven today including a spot that weighed one ounce under 5lbs....that was one mean fish. Quote

Super User KYntucky Warmouth Posted August 28, 2010 Super User Posted August 28, 2010 or you could buy a johnny morris signature series rod with the best reel seat made. Bass Pro reel seats are the worst I've ever seen for this, especially spinning rods and casting rods without front grips Quote

Super User bilgerat Posted August 29, 2010 Super User Posted August 29, 2010 Teflon tape is the way to go. It can stay there for years and leave nothing behind when removed. I also wrap the reel foot with it to protect the finish. Quote
philsoreel Posted August 29, 2010 Author Posted August 29, 2010 I think I'll stick with my Dobyns and Cumaras. Teflon tape is a great idea. Won't hurt a thing. Quote

fishinflip415 Posted August 29, 2010 Posted August 29, 2010 I own 10 dobyns rods from all different models savvy to champion extremes and never had one reel seat issue. I hope that it was just a weird occurrence but if you keep having a problem dobyns customer service is some of the best in the industry. Give them a call and you will be able to talk to either Gary himself or his son Richard both are very knowledgable and passionate about helping out there customers. 8-) Quote
Super User bilgerat Posted August 29, 2010 Super User Posted August 29, 2010 I have this problem with all my Loomis MBR series IMX rods...thanks for the teflon tape tip. Where do I buy teflon tape...never heard of it before. It's not "tape" in the traditional sense in that it has no adhesive. It's more or less teflon material in ribbon form packaged in a roll. It will likely be in the plumbing department wherever you get it. To get it on the reel seat, back the seat nut all of the way out. Lay the tape on the threaded portion of the seat where the nut will be when the reel is on. IMPORTANT wrap the tape in the same direction the nut turns when tightening. Wrap tightly as the tape will conform to the shape of the threads. Two to three wraps should do it. Pull on the tape when done to break it or cut it with a razor, then smooth down the tag end. Quote
