Just curious what rods and reels do you use for what lure?  Not brands but what reel ratio and rod length/weight?  Should be interesting to see all of the different preferences!

Jeff.

Shimano Curados plus a Castaic and a President and Revo S for casting.

There are my "core" setups...

Worm (1/2oz or less): 7' M/XF Rod. 6.3:1 Reel. 12lb flouro.

Worm (1/2oz or more): 7' MH/XF Rod. 6.3:1 Reel. 15 lb flouro.

Swimbait (small): 7'6" MH/F Rod. 5.1:1 Reel. 40lb braid

Crankbait (shallow): 7'6" M/M Rod. 5.1:1 Reel. 12 lb flouro.

Crankbait (deep): 7'6" MH/M Rod. 5.1:1 Reel. 12 lb flouro.

Frog/Flip (light): 7'6" H Rod. 7.0:1 Reel. 40lb braid.

Flip (heavy): 7'6" H Rod. 7.0:1 Reel. 65lb braid.

Topwater: 6'6" MH/F Rod. 6.3:1 Reel. 12lb mono.

Spinnerbait: 6' MH/F Rod. 6.3:1 Reel. 17lb mono.

Carolina Rig: 7'6" MH/F Rod. Spinning Reel (3500). 17lb cxx.

Finesse: 7' M/XF Rod. Spinning Reel (2500). 8lb flouro.

I have a dozen more setups stacked up in the garage. If I'm going somewhere where I know I'll being alot of a particular kind of fishing I can put together a couple more setups of that type.

I prefer a spinning rod for Carolina rigging. I am probably in the minority on that one, but I get a better feel for the bottom with the spinning rig.

This is something to consider as you build your

collection over time:

Technique specific rods are for "enthusiasts".

Almost all your fishing can be done with just

one rod. Beyond that, you only "need" three rods:

Spinning: 6 1/2' or 7', M or MH, Fast Action

(soft plastics and light lures)

Baitcasting: MH or H, Fast Action

(jigs, spinnerbaits, buzzbaits and all single hooks)

Baitcasting: MH, Moderate Action

(all treble hook lures)

Ha ha.. this is embarrasing.

2500 spinning reel, 7' MH rod, 10 lb line for small stuff.

Baitcasting reel, 6'6" M X-Fast rod, 17 lb line for spinnerbaits, swimjigs (my favorite), heavy plastics, ect.

Baitcasting reel, 6'9" XH X-Fast rod, 50 lb braid for flippin, frogs, buzzbaits, HEAVY t-rigs, carolina rigs.

Thats my wimpy arsenal!  :)

I agree with RW on three basics rigs being all you need. Once you move beyond there:

6' Med/Mod-Fast 6.1:1 casting for spinnerbaits

7' Med/Fast spinning 2500 size, tubes, small jigs, weightless plastics in-line spinners all <1/2 oz

7' Med-light/x fast 2500 spinning for finesse baits 1/16 - 3/8

7'6" Med-Hvy/Mod 5.1:1 casting for deep cranks

7' Med-Hvy/Fast 6.1:1 casting for t-rigs, Carolina rig, jigs

7'6" Heavy/Fast 7.1:1 casting for frogs, punching, flipping heavy cover

6'6" Med-Hvy/Mod-Fast or fast (soft tip) 6.1:1 casting for top water

7'6" MH XFast 40lb braid - Frogs, flipping, and larger texas rigs

7'6" MH ModFast 40lb braid - Spinnerbaits, deep cranks, plastic swimbaits, worms, and jigs

7'6" Glass/Graphite Composite M Fast 12lb fluoro - Crankbaits, jerkbaits

question for Lucky Craft Man...

Thnx for the comprehensive list...

I see that you switch to mono for your topwater...why do you use mono?

would you use it in heavy surface or near-surface grass or mats?

Thnx

Mono Floats?

Mono is less dense then water, so it floats.

While Fluorocarbon is more dense than water it sinks.

I'm not sure if Copoly sinks or floats, but I think braid floats too.

Braid Floats But mono actually IMO kinda sinks

Hmm never encountered sinking mono. What brand/type are you using?

Fred,

As other have said, I use mono because it floats (or at least has a much higher buoyancy than fluorocarbon). My topwater set-up is used mainly for walk-the-dog type baits, poppers, & prop baits. All treble hook lures (hence the moderate - fast action), which I fish in open water. If I am going to throw a surface lure (like a ragetail shad) around any type of cover, I use my frog or toad road, which both have braid (and also as mentioned above, braid floats).

Had all my rods, reels, and tackle stolen 5-6 months ago.  Here's what I have been fishing with since.  Shimano Curado 300 with Crucial 7'11" H rod for swimbaits.  Shimano Cardiff with Nitro 7'10" XH Rod for swimbaits.  Shimano Curado 200 with Crucial 6'8" for crankbaits.  Quantum Tour Grade Baitcaster 150 with 7' MH Cranking Rod for crankbaits, worms and jigs.  Shimano Curado 200 with Crucial 6'10" MH Rod for worms and jigs.   Shimano Sedona 2500 with BP Bionic 6'6" M Rod-Spining  Shimano Compre UL Rod with Daiwa Regal UL Reel.   Bill Dance Spinning Combo with Quantum Reel and 6'6" M Rod.    Use P-Line CX Premiun or CXX X-strong copolymer and rarely Trilene XT.

Finesse baits-6'10" ml/f spinning rod with eight pound braid

Shallow cranks, spinnerbaits, and buzzbaits- 6'6" mh/mf (fishes like a medium power) paired with a shimano bantam "greenie" curado, spooled with 12 pound mono.

Medium and deep diving cranks-7'3" mh/m rod paired with a daiwa excellor, spooled with 12 pound mono.

Jerkbaits and topwater-6'6" m/f (fishes like a medium heavy)spinning rod spooled with 10-12 pound braid for topwater in the summer, and 8 pound mono for jerkbaits in the winter.

Ned rig, shallow cranks-6'6" ml/mf spinning rod spooled with 6-8 pound braid for Ned rigging, and I'll swap out the spool for a spool loaded with 10 pound mono for shallow cranks if the need arises.

I recently broke two of my rods (one on a pike that surged under the kayak, and the other on a dumb cast), but these two are what I'm replacing them with.

Frogs, flipping, punching, big jigs-magnumheavy/fast 7'3" rod paired with an 8.2/1 ratio reel spooled with 40-50 pound braid.

Jigs, t-rigs, general purpose rod-mh/f 7' rod paired with an 7.1:1 ratio reel, spooled with 30-40 pound braid.
