Chris W. Posted August 23, 2010 Posted August 23, 2010 I don't have any d**n money! I was wondering if any of you had grease & oil you didn't like or want that was collecting dust, or almost empty that you have no use for as I am actively seeking out a job and can't spend the 20$ it will take to buy grease & oil for my quantum bait caster. It hasn't been cleaned in years so i figured now was the time to do it lol. Not begging, just wondering if you have any that's collecting dust, the people on this forum as far as i've seen are very generous so i figured asking wouldn't hurt. Thanks guys either way. I have Phil Wood Grease & Hoppes gun oil here i was going to use, but was told it would do more harm than good to my reel in the end. Quote
Super User skunked_again Posted August 23, 2010 Super User Posted August 23, 2010 the reel didnt come with lube? Quote
Chris W. Posted August 23, 2010 Author Posted August 23, 2010 Nope, it came with a tool to disassemble it though lol. It was one of the first accurist reels, i think i got it 5 or 6 years ago. Quote
0119 Posted August 23, 2010 Posted August 23, 2010 Ive used Phil Woods grease on gears with no trouble. I prefer to use Phils tacky oil on my spinning reels. Not many anglers are going to know of Phil Wood products, but they are excellent. Quote
Chris W. Posted August 23, 2010 Author Posted August 23, 2010 And the oil? This is what I have on hand http://www.philwood.com/products/greaseoilhandcleaner/ (the first green squeeze tube) http://www.hoppes.com/products/lubricating_oil.html (second bottle from the left) Quote
Super User .RM. Posted August 23, 2010 Super User Posted August 23, 2010 Chris W. E-mail me and I will make arrangements to get you some of my oil and gear grease to you, just cover shipping.. Tight Lines All! Quote
rubba bubba Posted August 23, 2010 Posted August 23, 2010 That Phil Wood grease is used to pack countless bike ball-bearings and pivots; it's a great all-purpose grease and you'll be fine with it. I'm not familiar with the oil, however. Quote
Chris W. Posted August 23, 2010 Author Posted August 23, 2010 I'm dying to tear into this reel lol. I use phil wood on all of my other reels and it smooths out over time, but stays where put. As far as the oil goes though, i don't know anything about quantums performance tuned bearings or anything, so i hope someone chimes in soon. Quote
Super User .RM. Posted August 23, 2010 Super User Posted August 23, 2010 Chris, IMPO I wouldn't use it. If it is a PT reel then check your PM's Tight Lines All! Quote

Chris W. Posted August 23, 2010 Author Posted August 23, 2010 .RM. is most certainly a standup guy. I'd just like to put it out on the forum and thank you, really. It's a great help! I'll repay you somehow. Thanks again. Quote

I'm not familiar with the oil, however. Phil's Tenacious Oil is VERY thick. We used it for lubing nipples (wheel builds) and to silence squeaky pedals and hubs. A little goes a long way. It does attract a TON of dirt though. If I'm having to use an oil lube I am using Boeshield T-9 or Remington Rem-Oil. Quote
Chris W. Posted August 23, 2010 Author Posted August 23, 2010 I got my philwood grease when i worked in the bike shop. I used the blue loctite when i built wheels lol, it stays when you true! Quote
Super User KYntucky Warmouth Posted August 24, 2010 Super User Posted August 24, 2010 the reel didnt come with lube? Quantums don't, just pick up some Abu oil and grease at walmart, it's not great but it's better to use reel oil and grease. I think it's like 2-3 bucks Quote

I use Slick Honey (thinnest grease I've ever come across) for the nipples on my wheel builds. FYI, Boeshield T-9 is not an oil, it is paraffin based. It's great stuff, I just wanted to mention that it's not oil based, that's all. Quote
Super User .RM. Posted August 25, 2010 Super User Posted August 25, 2010 Chris, On it's way............................... Quote
Chris W. Posted August 25, 2010 Author Posted August 25, 2010 Hey thanks! How many cleanings can you get out of it? Quote
Super User .RM. Posted August 25, 2010 Super User Posted August 25, 2010 Hey thanks! How many cleanings can you get out of it? IMPO once the reel is properly cleaned and the lube used just like any other. Using the HS grease only on the main gear teeth, one drop of HS oil on bearing packs and shims. Quite a few... 8-) Quote
Chris W. Posted August 26, 2010 Author Posted August 26, 2010 So less is more? In my spinning reels i tend to overlube because i don't want to keep taking them apart, and i grease my bearings because i want everything to last, this will be the first reel using oil on. Do i just put the grease on the teeth? Quote
