Vinny Chase Posted August 20, 2010 Posted August 20, 2010 I'm trying to decide on which reel i should get for my new deep crankbait rod. I currently own Curados and Revo SX's but am looking for something that will casts those baits a mile, even in the wind. I love my Revos but i feel sometimes they dont produce like they should in the wind. I am open for any suggestions, but i have had my eye on the premiers....Are they better casting then the SX's? Super User BASSclary Posted August 20, 2010 Super User Posted August 20, 2010 It depends mainly on your brake settings, spool tension and how trained your thumb is. If you can cast with out any brakes and hardly any spool tension, both of your reels will go forever with some quality oil. Quote
Vinny Chase Posted August 20, 2010 Author Posted August 20, 2010 I am also looking for something lightweight which i know the premier has. I think i comes down to the E5 and the premier, but i have been looking into other round reel options like the Abu Record. Quote

Yes, it is exclusively for my deep cranks (12+ ft) Quote
TBendBassin Posted August 20, 2010 Posted August 20, 2010 my setup is a curado e5 on a lamiglas SR765 and its the best deep crank setup ive ever used.. i would go with curado over the revo anyday especially the SX.. the curado is just workhorse and i prefer centrifugal brakes over magnetic Quote
Super User iceintheveins Posted August 20, 2010 Super User Posted August 20, 2010 Go with the Curado. The E5 is awesome from all crankbait use and also slow rolling spinnerbaits. Quote
Super User skunked_again Posted August 20, 2010 Super User Posted August 20, 2010 Daiwa Sol. better gearing than the curado and will handle baits as well. Quote
Super User Micro Posted August 20, 2010 Super User Posted August 20, 2010 Not sure how lightweight you want to go, but for long distance deep crank casting the Zillion High-Power performs incredibly well. Quote
Whets Lines Posted August 21, 2010 Posted August 21, 2010 It sounds like you use Revos already but have not mentioned the Abu reel designed for cranking. I swear by my Revo Winches. These have centrifugal brakes and with my 7' medium/modular cranking rod cast really well. They are slow and powerful. I have a Revo Skeet and a Premier. I prefer my winches to both of these for ease of casting and casting distance. Granted, they are heavier than both of these reels, but to me, when cranking, it doesn't really matter to me. I feel you are doing yourself a disservice by not considering the Winches. Whets 8-) Quote
Super User Big Bait Fishing Posted August 21, 2010 Super User Posted August 21, 2010 CTE-200 or 200GT those things are tanks !!! i would never use one of those things , they weigh over 10 ounces !!!!! Quote

Is the $80 more worth it? Quote

Is the $80 more worth it? the toro winch is bigger in size and holds 200 yards of 14 lb. line where as the winch is the same size as the sx, stx , skeet reese , premier, etc.. i have a toro 51 , the same reel but the toro winch has 4.6:1 gears . my toro has 5.4:1 gears (they also make a 6.4:1 gear ratio) the toro and toro winch are best used for swimbaits or baits that require bigger test lines(i have 25 lb. line on it) or when you need A LOT of line !!!! here is a comparison , on the left is a Revo toro(same size as the Revo toro winch)and on the right is a Revo sx (same size as the winch) Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted August 23, 2010 Super User Posted August 23, 2010 My revo-s handles 1/16 ounce baits better than the curado. I'm not sure if the rods are making a difference or not. Both reels are on a MH with a F tip, but I can cast the curado farther when throwing a 3/8 crankbait. The curado just seems a little more loose than the revo. Quote
Vinny Chase Posted August 23, 2010 Author Posted August 23, 2010 Thanks pgersumky! Ill probably go with the e5 or the winch after i go to cabelas and test them out. Quote

OMG!! 10oz!!! OMG!! The 100b Calcutta weighs .5oz more than a winch. I like both Shimano and Abu, but you take Abu fandom to Dodgeguy/Fireline levels sometimes. : Quote
Vinny Chase Posted August 23, 2010 Author Posted August 23, 2010 i just wish they made the premier in a lower gear ratio. That would make my decision a lot easier! Quote
SJB1226 Posted August 23, 2010 Posted August 23, 2010 Dont you love how someone always have something pricky to say? I dont like you, lol thats a awesome badge to wear! Long casting reel=Zillion they will throw cranks from 4 grams and over a long ways... the really start to bomb them at 1/4oz and over.... I love mine for throwing 3/4 to 1oz lipless cranks... on a nice long limber crank rod you can come close to spooling them with 17# line on them... If the Zillion is out of your price range the Aggrest... I dont have one but my dad has 2 or 3 and they feel solid there smooth and cast just about the same as a Zillion casting wise you wont be able to tell them apart... The are pretty light to like 7 1/2ozs... and can be had for 140ish new.... they do feel good for the price thats for sure and look pretty good to! The frame feels pretty good in hand and you can tell that its a high quality reel. the drag is very smooth to just a overall great reel at 140-150 dollars. Only problem you may have with it is the 7.3 GR working you to death deep cranking but if you are already used to a high speed reel for cranking this one would work perfect for you... If you can spring for the Zillion you can get a Low speed Crazy cranker and not be worked hard deep cranking! I have 2 and LOVE them! Quote

Nine Miler Posted August 24, 2010 Posted August 24, 2010 10 oz. balances okay on a fiberglass rod nearly 8 feet long...I'm just sayin.... Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted August 24, 2010 Posted August 24, 2010 As to the OP, casting distance is affected by rod, reel, line and bait. A long rod, supple line, heavy & aerodynamic bait with reel with good bearings and a heavy spool will give you the longest casts. A light spool starts easier for tossing light baits but the heavier spool will carry more inertia. Quote
