WanaBe_Like_IKE Posted August 23, 2010 Posted August 23, 2010 Ok I wanna try punching, Ima buy Paycheck Skirts and Hooks some BPS Bobber Stoppers, some random 1 1/2 ounce weight and some Braid. I will be doing this with a Abu Garcia Silver Max on a Abu Medium Heavy 7 ft rod untill I get into more then I will upgrade my rod. Ok my dad says that what I do is drop my bait straight down but I saw Bub Tosh (pro puncher) pitching it out there and bring it back. I know you put your bait in the water bounce it on and off the bottom reel in and repeat. How thick is to thick cause Bub Tosh was punching through stuff as thick as your back yard when it hasnt been mowed for 3 weeks or more. I just want to try this technique and dont know what to do. Super User David P Posted August 23, 2010 Super User Posted August 23, 2010 Nothing is too thick, if the 1 1/2oz doesn't get through, you bump it up to 2oz. Most stuff that guys punch a 1 1/2oz will work fine. 80lb braid, stout LONG rod is definitely a plus. You can flip or pitch your bait into the cover, and as you said, you bounce it off the bottom, or shake it on the bottom, whatever you prefer to do and what ever the fish prefer. Quote
WanaBe_Like_IKE Posted August 23, 2010 Author Posted August 23, 2010 OK my dad said that I just drop is sthaight down. He said I dont pitch it out there and bring it back to me through the grass, what do I actually do? Quote
Super User fishfordollars Posted August 23, 2010 Super User Posted August 23, 2010 Well if you want to be like Ike just yell and scream at it until it parts like the red sea. Seriously, just punch it through. bump it up and down a time or two and repeat in another spot. Be sure to drop it into any small opening you come across. Quote

You are fishing vertical, but you can still pitch it out to reach all of the mat. Pitch it out, let it sink, bounce it up and down once or twice, then reel it back in. Repeat. Quote
bassfishin14 Posted August 23, 2010 Posted August 23, 2010 i just got into punching, and its by far my favorite technique! what ive found out that it helps a ton if you have a long rod. i just picked out bubs irod and im really liking it. but anyways i usally just pitch it out and follow the bait down all the way cause they will smash it on the fall. then if they dont take it on the fall i usally let it sit for about 5-10 sec then jig it and shake. if i dont get hit or a fish ill pitch to another spot. good luck! brushhoggin Posted August 23, 2010 Posted August 23, 2010 i wish someone would design a 1.5 weight that would punch through the heavy stuff, then shed most of that weight off to get the rate of fall of a 1/8oz weight. ;D Quote

brushhoggin Posted August 23, 2010 Posted August 23, 2010 so that's basically just a drop shot rig with heavier line and gear? Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted August 24, 2010 Super User Posted August 24, 2010 Here is a nice video on punching. He also has one on fishing a new rod from a new company designed specifically for punching. Google is your friend. You should be able to find a few more videos. Quote
