Looking for a solid all around spinnerbait setup. Do most of you guys use high speed ratios with your spinnerbait setups? i also have a 6'6 mhf allstar Rod is that a decent spinnerbait rod? Really not a spinerbait guy but trying to get into it a little bit more. Thanks for all the help in advance!

Depends on how big your spinnerbaits will be. A 1/4 or 3/8 oz spinnerbait can be fished with just about anything. A 3/4 or 1 oz on the other hand will probably require a faster retrieve and a heavier rod unless you want your wrists and hands to get tired.

If you don't mind that though, you can still use whatever you have. I can catch fish with a 3/4 Booyah dual willow spinnerbait on an old 2 pc shakespeare 6' medium fast spinning rod with an Abu Cardinal 801, which is a fairly small and light reel. Sure, I could tie the spinner onto my baitcaster rig, but I'm lazy and like to carry only 1 rod around with me when I fish smaller ponds. Haven't noticed any difference in catching fish between the two setups though - just that the light spinning setup requires a little more work on my part.

the rod you have is a decent spinnerbait rod.. i prefer 7.1.1 ratio and ill slow the retrieve down if neccasary

My favorite setup for the spinnerbaits I use the most (1/4 to 1/2 ounce compact) is a 7'Med/Fast rod with a 6.2 to 1 reel. I use a softer rod because I use braid, when I used mono I used a Med/Heavy rod like you have. Spinnerbaitin' around shallow cover is awesome!

that rod will be just fine for spinner baits as long as you dont go to big and over load the rod just as others have said.

I would go with a 7.1 reel as sometimes burning it can kill them and a slower reel with eat you alive doing that... You can slow a high speed reel down with ease a lower speed reel trying to speed it up is more work.. modern BC reels (Higher end reels) have HEG like she-mano has lol and lower speed reels dont really feel much easier to reel in hard pulling lures then the new high speed reels with LARGE gears.. I only fish Daiwas and I use a Zillion HLC a Zillion type R and a 7.1 Steez 103 for spinner baits and even the big blades dont work you to hard on these high speed reels. so YES go with a high speed reel you will be happy with it I assure you and it will excel at buzz baits when you want to throw them!

Im using a Powell Endurance 6'7" MH/XF for spinnerbaits, A little more length than a 6'6" which I like, but not too long. I like a shorter rod for my spinners for more accurate casts around cover, and even though I prefer a 7.X, i'm rolling with a Fuego, so something like 6.4:1 is what i'm using. As for line, I'm always gonna be throwing 12# yo-zuri hybrid or 17# flourocarbon, I prefer InvizX.

Two of my spinnerbait rods are 6-9 XF, the reels on those two rods are 3.8:1. Two of my spinnerbait rods are 7', the reels on those two are 5:1. One spinnerbait rod is 6' and has a 5:1. I don't, generally, throw baits under 3/4 ounce, there are only a couple instances in which I do. My Stand by rods are the 6-9 with the 3.8 reels. It's impossible to slow a 7:1 reel down to fisha bait like the 3.8 will, but I can still wake a 3/4 ounce bait. (IN most cases, I can wake it a LOT easier because I have more torque in the lower gear ratio...)

i like a reel that has a 25" ipt. it's hard to just go by gear ratio because they're not all the same. a daiwa fuego has a 27-28" ipt, (as does a revo premier) whereas the daiwa steez 103ha has an 24-25" ipt. the 25" ipt seems to be where i'm comfortable, it's fast enough but not too fast, for me.

i got on a kick a few years ago using mod action rods for all moving baits. i can't remember which posting board i was posting on at the time, but a few people kept insisting glass rods were the greatest thing in the world for all reaction baits. i had a 7' mh daiwa tds crank rod, so i decided to give it a shot. i remember the 1st fish i caught on it, the hook just pierced the fish and i had to actually use pliers to get the hook out of its mouth! i really think that's the whole thing with crankbait-type mod action rods. instead of jerking the hook into fish, they just pull it in.

with all that said, i think rod action is just kind of personal preference. use whatever feels right to you!

I use two rods for spinnerbaits. Fpr 3/16 and 1/4 oz. baits I use a St Croix 7' M power/fast action Legend Tournament with a Curado 51E, and for 3/8's and 1/2 oz baits, I use a 7' MH power/fast Legend Tournament with a Citica 201E. I don't use 3/4 or 1 oz baits much, but if I did the MH LT would be ok with them.

Avid AVC68MXF, AVC62MXF, Legend Tx. Bass LTBC70MF. Any reel with 28-32 IPT is fine.

Tour KVD 7'2" MH/XF paired with an Energy E750PT (5.1:1) spooled with 17# Sufix Siege. I typically throw 3/8 and 1/2oz models but will throw 1/8oz and 3/4oz on this set up as well.

Years ago, I was several hundred dollars into the search for a good spinner bait rod. Then I found an All Star Zell Roland special 6'9" spinner bait rod. It was a good rod and I bought one. The next year they upgraded the graphite (10 MX ??, I'm not sure) and so anyway, I bought 5 of them. That was 7 or 8 years ago.

I'm pretty sure that there are better spinnerbait rods out there now, but I'm going to keep using these until I break them all. They work for me in all respects, i.e. they are sensitive enough and I get all the distance I need with reasonable accuracy.

So, if you find one in a bargain bin somewhere, don't be afraid to spend a few bucks on it.

Personally, I find MH to be the right stiffness, 5'9" for close work around shallow cover and docks,,,,,,,7'6" for open weeds and grass for offshore work...both on 6.1-1 baitcasters.

I am currently using a 7' M Lamiglas Excel with a Quantum Kinetic burner and 50lb PP Super Slick. If I feel I need a heavier stick I will use my Powell Squarebill rod, but the Lamiglas gets the job done for most of my spinnerbait fishing.

My primary spinnerbait/chatterbait rod(3/8-3/4oz baits) this year will be a 6'10" MH Fenwick Elite Tech Spinnerbait rod with a Morrum SX3600C(5.3:1) spooled with 15lb Izorline Platinum. If I'm going lighter I'll probably throw them on one of my M set-ups(Premier on 6'10" M F Smallmouth ETech with 12 Trilene Hi-Test & CU50E on 682 Powell Max with 10 Trilene 100%) & throw heavier baits with my Winch on 7' MH Cabela's XML Spinnerbait rod with 20lb Trilene XL Armour Coat.

Dobyns Champ 733c

Lews Tournament speed Spool 6.4

BPS 12# flouro

I throw mostly 3/8 oz.

I also throw spinnerbaits up to 1/2 oz on a Dobyns Champion 733C. It is the perfect spinnerbait rod as far as I'm concerned.
