I'm thinking about getting my dad a custom built rod for his birthday. I saw the Z-bone builder on kistler's website and it looked really cool.

Would it be a good idea to get a custom rod there? How are Kistler's blanks compared to Loomis?

Thanks,

Collin

I like Kistler a lot, and the z-bone concept is intriguing.

I actually went through the online process of picking out the specific components, but didn't pull the trigger.

I'm sure others can give you more specifics when it comes to custom built, but if I were to do it I believe I would go to an individual as opposed to Kistler. If you do it with them seems like you don't have as many options as you would if you went to someone and were able to talk it through with them.

Seems like it is a lot more personal with a small builder, and I believe there are several good ones who are members here.

There are a few guys on here who build rods and have posted pictures of their work and I would feel its much more personal with one of them than with a big company. Plus you can pic ANY blank or guides or anything you want that way....

I will suggest two names

George Roth (George's Custom Rods)

Matt Davis (Otterods)

I have 4 rods built by George and am extremely happy with them...soon to be 5

I have seen plenty of Matt's work and it is exceptional

Matt Davis (Otterods) Is the best builder that ive ever worked with! I have 4 rods from him and they are tee totally stellar in everyway and the rods are beautiful!

Another builder that I have 6 rods from is Sword rods..Sebatian Wehr makes the best sick looking rods money can buy and will put your thoughts in to every inch of the rod!!!

I say Matt is the best builder and I say that because he builds amazing rods and dont make you wait forever to get them.. Sword rods make wicked sweet rods but they come at a price and thats wait times.. prices are inline with all other highend rod builders but both of these dudes will build you a rod that you wont believe when you open it.

I own a Z-Bone and it is a sweet rod VERY VERY strong and VERY sensitive.. I wouldnt buy another.. I bought it just because I always have to try out the new stuff.. I dont fish the Z-bone I just dont have room on the boat for something that isnt Daiwa, Megabass, Evergreen or a true Custom build... But all in all its a nice rod that anyone would like.. for the money they cost a small custom builder and build you a much better looking rod that will preform as good or better. If you do go with the Z-Bone you HAVE to get the LE blank.
