I need some help from our knowledgeable crew...

Let me start by saying I am new to freshwater fishing, being from long island i mainly salt water fish. That being said I am in the process of setting up my first rod/reel for fresh water.

With everything that i have read here I have already ordered my reel with confidence, which is a Curado 200. What I need to do is now pair it with a suitable rod for general use (plastics, spinners maybe some crank baits) for some local bass fishing.

So I am thinking 6'-6'6"MH/Fast action. Problem is I would prefer a 2-piece rod due to transport and storage issues. Can any of you guys suggest a rod that would suit my needs. I am kinda on a budget and would like to keep this at around 150-200.

I could put the back seat down in my car when i need too if you guys think that i am just better off with a 1 piece, if that is the way i should go tell me. I know there are ton more choices this way...do you think i would get more bang for my $?

Ok maybe a 2-piece rod suggestion and a 1-piece rod suggestion is what i need....

HELP!!!

Thanks for the help in advance, guys, i really appreciate it.

I'll let you in on my story. First time buying a baitcaster, bought a shakespeare SKP something or other. it was a barrel baitcaster. Bought a 6'6" 1 piece rod and loved the sensitivity, fact that it won't come apart and it just seemed to have more stability than 2 pieces. Forward 6 years and two other baitcasters of way better quality and i now seek out a 2 piece rod. Reason being, i fish in areas where carrying a 6'6" rod or even fishing with one is like walking through a doorway with your arms out. It's difficult to walk through the woods or cast in confined areas. If i could i would have both a 2 piecw 6' M and a 6'6" 1 piece MH, both casting rods. Or even a 7' MH 1 piece. Just do a lot of thinking as to where youre going to fish, if youre going to walk to some spots or whatnot. If they're all open areas and you drive to them invest in a good 1 piece, but if you travel or walk to spots and whatnot, get a 2 piece, or better yet, get a 1 and 2 piece.

In today's world you won't be able to tell the difference in a 1 and 2 piece rod like a few years ago.  I have a couple that I got as gifts and have to look at them to tell the difference when I am using them.

A Med Hvy/ Fast action rod is the most versatile for bass fishing applications. Look for the same thing in a 2 pc. rod that you would in a 1 pc. Get the highest quality rod your budget can accommodate. A 2 pc. will fish just fine.

Thanks guys for all the advice, keep it coming...

I did find a Shimano Compre 6'6" med/fast 2-piece, do you think that med is ok instead of med/heavy?  Pros? Cons?

MED/FAST and med/hvy are two differant things.

Med/fast is the action and med/hvy is the power.

You are correct I do apologize...allow me to be a little clearer...

I found a 2 piece that is med power with a fast action...do you think that is ok? Pros? Cons? Remember I know really nothing..

I know this probably won't help you much, but it really varies from one manufacturer to another. A M/F from St. Croix, for example, will typically be a bit "heavier" (power, not weight) than a similar model from Shimano.

Actually that does help, I have been reading and I do see that some companies are heavier then others, but it is hard to keep track of them all...so yes that is helpful, cause it tells me that if I go with a Shimano product I should get med/heavy with a fast action....

Looks like I am gonna end up with a few rods...lol...I am really making my self crazy...

I have the two piece Cabelas Mag Touch rod in the MH model and really like it.  Casts well, good sensitivity for soft plastics, and I actually like the handle better than any of my other rods. You could wait until they go on sale which should be any day now.

Yup, that looks like a winner. Course it doesn't fit within the OP's stated budget. You've got too much quality equipment! :) And apparently too much time on your hands for looking at more of the same. :) :)

However, I'm sure I am not the only one who appreciates your suggestions and opinions. ;D

Here's a link to Quantum PT rod sale at Cabela's. $229.99 rod on sale for $79.99. Only model left is the 6' 6" M/F casting rod. Too bad I'm broke! :'(

It does fit the $150-200 budget ----> 12,600 yens = 149 dollars. :)

Personally, I prefer 1 piece rods, but that's just me. All my rods are 1 piece except my 9 foot fly rods which are 2 pieces for obvious reasons. Many fly rods come in 4 or 6 pieces, I just prefer fewer joints (on the rod). Of course if you don't have a vehicle that can carry long rods then 2 or more pieces make sense. My fishing buddies use 2 piece rods with no complaints.

St. Croix has a 6'6" MH/F rod in their Premier line. I don't have any first hand experience with St. Croix rods, but I am sure if you do a search you find a lot of people like them. Depending on what type of lures you plan to use the Med/F Shimano Compre rod would be pretty good.

I agree that with quality of today's rods you won't be able to notice the differnce between a 1 and 2 piece rod, but you do get a whole lot more options whith 1 piece rods.

Thani you all for your input and advice, Do to the resent sale of a knife I am now able to add a little more money to my rod fund.  I have found a loomis MBR783 GLX 2-piece...it is costly, but I am willing to sound the money...good choice?

Thanks again!!
