tracker01 Posted June 9, 2010 Posted June 9, 2010 I own a couple of "centrifugal" brake Shimano's. Citica and Curado. I am wanting to try a decent "magnetic braking baitcaster for general use. Never had one. What would you suggest for a fairly light, 6.0 or better on the gear ratio, and in the price range of the Citica or Curado. Do not need allot of line capacity just a nice easy casting , palmable (low profile) reel. I am not ready to put my Shimano's aside I just want to try something different. Thanks Quote
LilJakeC1 Posted June 9, 2010 Posted June 9, 2010 The Pro Qualifier is a great reel with both breaking systems! They are also very affordable. Quote
BobP Posted June 9, 2010 Posted June 9, 2010 I'm a Shimano guy but got an Abu Revo SX last year and am liking it. Personally, I think the 7:1 gears are too fast. If I had a "do-over" I'd buy the 6.4:1 version. They only thing I don't like about the SX is the level wind tube opens forward instead of down like on many other reels. If you use braid or fish where lots of sand/dirt comes in on your line when you retrieve it, the forward facing opening may cause your levelwind to get fouled quicker. No problem so far, but I wonder "now why the hell did they do that?". You can find an SX on Ebay for around $150 delivered. They cast and retrieve very nicely and I've had zero problems with mine in more than a year of use. Quote

adclem Posted June 9, 2010 Posted June 9, 2010 Revo SX, outstanding reel. Especially the new improved 2010 magnetic brake versions. Later, Quote

I'm finding that as I put more specific combos together I'm finding less purpose for the mid-range speed, I either want fast or slow Quote
Super User K_Mac Posted June 9, 2010 Super User Posted June 9, 2010 The Pro Qualifier is a great reel with both breaking systems! They are also very affordable. The dual braking will allow enable you to experiment with both. I find I use the mostly centrifugal, but it is nice to have the magnetic when the wind is blowing. Quote

Very true, on windier days I will us my Pro Qualifier or STX, and leave my centrifugal for when I can casting with the wind. Quote

BPS catalog lists the IPT at 29" but the manual says 26". Quote
Super User SoFlaBassAddict Posted August 8, 2010 Super User Posted August 8, 2010 Returned my Carbonlite when the sideplate release pin started to corrode. I'll stick with the PQ. Loved those EVA foam grips on them though. Quote
repper Posted August 9, 2010 Posted August 9, 2010 you might be able to score Daiwa Sol at a great price in the next couple of weeks on ebay. great reel, castsw light weightws as well as anything, and if you can get one for 150.00 it's the best deal out there at the present time. i love mine, especially for throwing the light weights. low profile too! BrASSmonkey Posted August 9, 2010 Posted August 9, 2010 If you don't mind used, then you can get a used Daiwa Fuego or Sol well into the low 100's. I know, because I did. You can also get used Daiwa Advantage HSTA for well within that price range. All of these are good magnetic reels, although the HSTA is a little wide. The Fuego is a great all around reel. The thing I find about the magnetic brakes is that you do want to make sure you adjust the spool tension for every different lure you are throwing. The external dial ont eh brakes make it nice and easy to adjust the brakes for changing winds. I find centrifugal brakes more forgiving. Good luck with whatever you choose. Quote
Dockhead Posted August 10, 2010 Posted August 10, 2010 I also enjoy Shimano reels, but recently picked up both a Pro Qualifier and a Tierra. I am liking them both a lot, the magnetic brake is more of an advantage than I thought. Makes life pretty easy. I also just picked up a Carbonlite on the flea market, have not had it out yet. But it sure is promising for the price. If you go with a Patriarch XT make sure you check ebay. I have seen them going for a lot less that $250. Quote
