rowyourboat Posted August 5, 2010 Posted August 5, 2010 this is my first time using braid..... my lake doesnt have a ton of sloppy weeds, but there are some. so what lb test do you recommend? Quote
Super User SoFlaBassAddict Posted August 5, 2010 Super User Posted August 5, 2010 I use 30 and 40 on my casting reels with little to no problems. 30 can dig into itself a little, but it's still manageable. Lots of guys here recommend 50 to totally alleviate the digging in. I would definitely never go under 30 pound on a casting reel though. I use 20 on my spinning reels and have never had a problem with it. Just remember, braid can be a little adventuresome if you've got strong winds. It still works, you just have to get used to it a bit. Quote
Super User dodgeguy Posted August 6, 2010 Super User Posted August 6, 2010 30 lb in fireline braid will not dig at all on a baitcaster.30 lb in any other brand will. Quote

Mich. St8 Spartan Posted August 6, 2010 Posted August 6, 2010 30lb test should do fine +1. I like the Suffix brand, JMHO. Quote
swilly78 Posted August 7, 2010 Posted August 7, 2010 30# Suffix for me on my casters, 20# Power pro on my spinning rig. Quote
Nibbles Posted August 7, 2010 Posted August 7, 2010 30 lb in fireline braid will not dig at all on a baitcaster.30 lb in any other brand will. IIRC, that's cause 30# fireline has a thicker diameter than most other 30# braids. Quote

adclem Posted August 8, 2010 Posted August 8, 2010 I use 20lbs on my spinning reels and 50 to 55lbs on my bait casters. I have tried Fireline and it is ok. I was a huge Power Pro fan till this year. Bought a couple new spools for this year and the line was terrible. Broke extremely easily and was just not up to Power Pro standards. So I tried Suffix this year and have been very impressed so far. So I got some Daiwa Samurai braid for my new Revo SX and holy cow this line is amazing. Expensive but the best braid I have ever tried. Later, Quote

Super User Hammer 4 Posted August 8, 2010 Super User Posted August 8, 2010 If you use samuri, the 55# is about the same diameter as 10-12 lb mono. I would think 40lb braid would be a good choice for your spinning reel. Other brands may vary. Quote
S h o c k e r Posted August 9, 2010 Posted August 9, 2010 20# on spinning with 10# 6' Floro Leader using alberto knot 50# Straight for Casting Quote
Kowen117 Posted August 9, 2010 Posted August 9, 2010 30 lb in fireline braid will not dig at all on a baitcaster.30 lb in any other brand will. It may not dig in on it self but it casts like CRAP Quote
Super User Fishing Rhino Posted August 9, 2010 Super User Posted August 9, 2010 And there you have it. A primer on braided line. It all depends on who you ask. I use fifteen and up on my baitcasters. I've yet to have any of the lines dig in. Maybe I need to catch bigger fish. I have my preference in lines of each type, but could live with most any of the "good" brands without missing a beat. The differences are slight. Then again, maybe my touch isn't sensitive enough to know the difference. In the end, you'll have to try various lines to see what suits your preferences, not those of others. Quote

Super User Fishing Rhino Posted August 9, 2010 Super User Posted August 9, 2010 By "good", I simply mean the popular, established names. They did not survive by making junk. I don't know a thing about the cheapo, off brand stuff. My life experience has not been good whenever I've tried a product like that, be it fishing equipment, tools or whatever. They (the established name brands) will all work. Some better than others. I've seen 'em all praised and all criticized. Quote
rubba bubba Posted August 9, 2010 Posted August 9, 2010 I think you have to define "Good" brands for those new to braid.. Mainstream brands that are most popular on this board: - Fireline - Suffix - PowerPro New to the braid party, and pricey: Daiwa Samurai braid Everyone's preferences are different; of the mainstream I like Fireline the best and think it casts the smoothest; others swear by PowerPro. I have not used Samurai. You'll have to try them over time and gain experience on all of them before figuring out what is "best" for you. Quote
Nice_Bass Posted August 9, 2010 Posted August 9, 2010 I was always a big fan of powerpro if and when I had to use braid. However I wanted to be cheap as I am buying a new boat and tride out Strens braid. Used it yesterday pitching/flipping, and a bit of casting. It worked just fine for have the price. Quote
