Mich. St8 Spartan Posted July 29, 2010 Posted July 29, 2010 Hello all, new to the forum. I am looking to get a new spinning reel to go along with a Powell Max 703. I will be using it for jigs, tubes and worms. I own mostly baitcasters and a few Gander Mountain spinning reels. What reel would you suggest for my type of use. I have looked at the Shimano Symetre, Pflueger Magnesium and Quantum Kinetic. I am not locked down on any specific price but do not want to break the bank. Your opinions are all welcome. Thanks for the help. Quote
bigfruits Posted July 29, 2010 Posted July 29, 2010 welcome to the forum. ive had many symetres and i think theyre a great reel. haven't tried the others. i'd skip the saros (though theyre nice too) and go for a stradic if youre willing to spend a little more. ($120 shipped online) if the 3000 size symetres are like the stradic 3000s, the only difference between a 3000 and 2500 is a larger spool on the 3000. i like the larger spool to tie on 8lb flouro (with mono backing) on my light jig/t-rig spinning rods. i think 2500 size is perfect for an all around bass spinning rod. DaveT63 Posted July 29, 2010 Posted July 29, 2010 I don't know what breaking the bank would be, but I would highly recommend the Stradic CI4 2500. Great reel, and light weight to boot. You can cast that thing all day long and not get tired. Quote
Super User dodgeguy Posted July 29, 2010 Super User Posted July 29, 2010 pflueger supreme xt and patriarch are by far the best buys bar none in spinning reels. Quote
Super User SoFlaBassAddict Posted July 29, 2010 Super User Posted July 29, 2010 I don't know what breaking the bank would be, but I would highly recommend the Stradic CI4 2500. Great reel, and light weight to boot. You can cast that thing all day long and not get tired. For 200 bucks, you cannot beat that reel. I've messed around with one a few times. It's almost gross how lightweight it is. Once the larger sizes get released, I fully plan on buying a couple of them for some of my saltwater fishing. Quote
ChiCityBasser Posted July 29, 2010 Posted July 29, 2010 I have the Quantum Kinetic and it's a great reel. I pretty much use it for the same purpose and it did spend a bit of time as the reel I would use with frogs. The new PT series of reels are lighter than last years and much smoother with great drag systems. Quote

Super User KYntucky Warmouth Posted July 29, 2010 Super User Posted July 29, 2010 pflueger supreme xt and patriarch are by far the best buys bar none in spinning reels. Well since the Patriarch an new Supreme XT aren't available yet and the old xt is fugly, I'm going to disagree. I would suggest a regular Supreme or President for the lower price point or a Stradic CI4 for a higher prices offering Quote
Super User grimlin Posted July 29, 2010 Super User Posted July 29, 2010 Where you at in MI? I can let you test run a few Daiwas Tierra and fuego...I love my Daiwas. I have my Daiwa fuego on a Powell max 683 right now.Awesome tube and weightless plastic baits set up. Quote

I'd agree with this. I have a Saros (which I love), but wish I would have spent a little more for a Stradic. One thing to consider is that you need to step up to at least the Saros to get the extra spool included. Shimano changed that a couple years back. I like the 3000 size as well. Quote

Dave T. Posted August 1, 2010 Posted August 1, 2010 Between my son and I, we have 3 Supreme's, a few older Stradic's, a newer Stradic FI, and I have a new CI4 (no question - my favorite). We have had a couple of issues with two of the Supreme's, and we've probably seen the last of them because of those issues. The older Stradic's had issues with binding when they got wet... the newer models seem to have resolved those issues. I've had several Diawa's in my hand and was very tempted. They are a very smooth reel, but lacked the retrieve speed that I prefer. Plus, my buddy has a couple, and they seem to eat bail spring pretty quickly... at least for him. ;D The two things that have sold me on the newer Shimano's are the fast retrieve speed and the beveled lip on the spool. I'm pretty sure the beveled lip increases casting distance, and I'm certain that it reduces issues with line loops/knots. It also makes filling the spool a no brainer... just fill it to where the bevel starts. Quote
northern basser Posted August 1, 2010 Posted August 1, 2010 I have 2 symetre's and they work great for me. I've been really wanting one of those CI4's though I've spent too much on my BC set-ups so $'s just not there for one right now. Quote
Super User Hammer 4 Posted August 2, 2010 Super User Posted August 2, 2010 After looking at all the reel options in the 2500 size. I'm getting the Stradic FI. I'm a semi Shimano fan anyways.. ;D Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted August 2, 2010 Super User Posted August 2, 2010 Can't go wrong with a stradic for sure, hate the handle on the c-14. I love my sorons ( cardinal 800 series, same reel) I replaced the handle on my 802 with an 804 handle, perfect fit with a larger handle, it elevated this reel. Quote
Mich. St8 Spartan Posted August 3, 2010 Author Posted August 3, 2010 I think I have decided on the Symetre or the CI4. Question is, is the CI4 worth the extra $$? I have looked at both and the CI4 is one lite motha. Not crazy about the handle though and for the $$ you would think you would get an extra spool?? Quote

I have thought about that, and it would be cool to have much of the reel be corrosion free, since that Ci4 does not rust. Quote

smallwatermayhem Posted August 5, 2010 Posted August 5, 2010 Shimano makes a good spinning reel. Quote

I have both reels , the C14 in worth the extra money and the symetre binds up when it gets wet , I know this from first hand experience. Quote
repper Posted August 5, 2010 Posted August 5, 2010 take a look at the Daiwa Sol. check out the prices on ebay. i can't speak about the new Stradic, but the Daiwas are bullet proof, at least mine have been. and i can't say that about the old Stradic. i think Daiwa makes the best spinning reels. of curse it's just my opinion. but it's based on way too many years of fishing. I've got a couple of sols and a couple of Fuego reels and they have all been perfect. and they have many hours of fishing on them. 20-30 lb braid with fluro leaders. Quote
DaveT63 Posted August 6, 2010 Posted August 6, 2010 As RW posted in another thread, the CI4 is on sale. For a few dollars more that the Stradic FI, you really can't beat it. And I don't have a problem with the handle. It all comes down to personal preference. http://www.reedssports.com/Category/custom.taf?cpage=132 Quote
CWilliams Posted August 6, 2010 Posted August 6, 2010 CI4 at $160. I would get two if I were you. Quote
