hey guys im trying to get situation specific gear now, and so i thought id ask you guys about casting rods.  what action length and tip would you use for

1.carolina rigging

2.crankbaits

3.shakey head

4. top water (buzzbaits, poppers, sammys)

5. frogs

6.jigging

7.T-rigging

also, for the rods that say what they are best for on the shaft, is that accurate? or just a marketing thing.

This is something to consider as you build your

collection over time:

Technique specific rods are for "enthusiasts".

Almost all your fishing can be done with just

one rod. Beyond that, you only "need" three rods:

Spinning: 6 1/2' or 7', M or MH, Fast Action

(soft plastics and light lures)

Baitcasting: MH or H, Fast Action

(jigs, spinnerbaits, buzzbaits and all single hooks)

Baitcasting: MH, Moderate Action

(all treble hook lures)

;)

My crankbait rod for:

Baitcasting is a 7' MH/MF (graphite)

Spinning is a 6'6" M/M (fiberglass)

I also use them for pretty much any treble hook lures.

Frogs: 7' MH/F when I fish them.

T-Rigging: 6'6" M/F with this rod also doubling as my swim jig setup.

The biggest problem with technique/situation specific rods is that rarely do 2 guys prefer the same thing... so my list would differ from yours.  Instead, try this-

Take the rods you have and list (length, power action) on paper and what you like them for and then list out what you do or don't like about them for the other techniques you want a rod for.  Then you can tailor the characteristics of each scenario to best fit your actual preferences in a rod purchase.

Spot on....I have several rods with suggested techniques on them, I may use them for that technique or I may not.  Things like dropshot and shakey head rods just boggle my mind.  alot of companies put out these short, weak rods for these techniques, I like a good 7'+M rod for both techniques, I feel like I get more control.

Okay....I'll run down my list of preferences:

1.carolina rigging-7'3" MH/F casting

2.crankbaits - 7' M/MF casting (glass)

3.shakey head - 6'8" M/XF spinning

4. top water (buzzbaits, poppers, sammys)-Buzzbaits= 7' MH/F casting; Popper, Sammys= 6'8" M/XF casting

5. frogs - 7' H/F casting

6.jigging -6'8" M/XF (finesse), 7' MH/XF (football) and 7'3" MH/F (pitching) all casting

7.T-rigging- same as above.

This is just what I'm comfortable with; your should use whatever suites you. ;)

I have 3 rods (well 4 if you count the fly rod)

1. 6'6" M Baitcaster (I use this for probably 90% of my fishing)

2. 7'6" MH Spinning rod (this is a beast, I only use it when I need to throw HEAVY lures).

3. 5' Ultra Light (I use this for small lures and finesse fishing).

I bet I only use the big spinning rod once or twice a season. The only reason that I hate not having multiple rods is because I go through a lot of line changing lures ;)

I think Dave Mercer puts it best. Fishing rods are like golf clubs, yes, you can putt with a driver, but it's a lot easier with a putter.

A lot of things ARE easier with a specific rod, but you'll still get it done with ANY rod.
