What is the pointed, heart-shaped bill supposed to do as opposed to the standard lip?  Do you have success with them and if so, under want circumstances/conditions do you fish it?

When I was fishing the model As, I couldn't get a bite.  The fat free shad and guppy models were doing great but these...I don't know.  I'm about to sell them at the yard sale.

Cheers.

I don't have experience with these lures other than the model 6A. I don't know what the shape of the bill is supposed to do. But this is an excellent crankbait and, as far as I know, it's an extremely popular one, an "old standard", if you will. If someone's not catching fish with these they probably haven't used it in the right place at the right time.

But I agree you should sell them if you have no confidence in them or you don't have the desire to use them to see if you can succeed with them.

Yes, I have success.  In fact, it's among my favorite crank baits.  I used them a lot this fall, mostly in crawdad and firetiger color, and I did very well with them.  I used them mostly in tidal, brackish creeks, catching fish usually in around 6-10 feet of water.  Water temps were in the low to mid 50s.

I guess you can use them anythime.  But I was particularly successful with them this fall.

Bomber Model As are great cranks IMO. They have caught bass in alot of different situations for me.

Bream Master,

You may want to ask your lip question to the guys in tacklemaking.

I know that the square lipped crank is good for throwing in wood.

I know that the larger the bill the deeper the bait will run.

I would think that the heart shapped bill will cause the crank to run  and wobble as created by the manufacturer to give it a different look.

So please ask your question to the guys who frequent tacklemaking as I would think they would have an answer for your query.

Just curious as to the "heart-shaped bill" comment.  Is it a Model A or is it a Speed Shad?  I have a bunch of Speed Shads that have that bill but do not have any Model A's with that bill.  If they are the old Speed Shad then you definitely should sell them to me because they DO NOT WORK at all!  :P Just kidding.  I have caught a bunch of fish in the spring and fall on the older Speed Shads.

I am going to take a guess that the heart shaped bill will cause the bait to have a tighter woble and dig into bottom more.

Anyway, I think there great baits if you can find one that runs true.  I have 8 of them and 3 are the same color but all of them run different.  Only two of them have been productive.

i would guess that the spade shaped bill causes it to have a tighter wobble. im not sure on that though. what i am sure of is they are very good cranks. i like the 2A and SquareA's alot.

Heres my 2 cents. I have had a lot of good luck on the model A but in the 6 and 7A's . Its unlike a DD14 or DD22 or even a fat free shad that vibrate fairly hard and feels awkward to fish because of their size and often times in the winter to much vibration. The 7a's to me have a wide kinda roll side to side type action. It feels good to have a crankbait that will dive 8 to 11 or 12 feet at the most and not wear you out at the end of the day.Right now is the time I use the 7A's mainly in the winter in dark green crawdad and brown crawdad.

Welcome to the forum Scotty :P

Denny Brauer once stated that the "Bomber 7A" probably won more money than any other plug.

i love the model A    im not 100% sure why the bill is pointed but i have heard from some people that square billed cranks bounce of wood  pointed bills bounce of rocks    but its a great smallmouth crank thats for sure
