So I had a break off earlier today, right at my leader connection.  I figured that this was as good as a time to try out the Alberto knot that RW has suggested for a while know.  Takes me a little longer to tie it, primarily because it's new to me.  I'm really impressed with the strength of this knot compared to the uni-uni connection.  It's also a far smaller knot.  For those of you who haven't tried it, do it.  You really may be surprised with it in the end.

The knot is pretty easy after you tie it a few times.

Apparently I have a short between my brain and hands. The Alberto is one knot I absolutely cannot tie.

Funny how that works. I can tie the Alberto without any problems, but the often recommended "J-knot" drives me nuts trying  :)

I never use a leader, but I do use the Alberto knot to tie mono backing to braid, and it works very well.

If the diagram confuses you then how about some pics:

They're calling it a modified Albright but it's the same knot. If it works for off-shore tuna then it oughta' work for anything in freshwater!

Knot Wars declared it the winner in braid to leader knots too:

I'm very happy with it.  Had zero breaking at the knot yesterday at all.  Couldn't be happier with it.

Anyone use this knot for fluorocarbon leaders?

Yep.

Yep.

Great, thanks. I'm finding myself using braid more and more often. I usually just use a mono leader, but if this knot works well, I may give fluoro another shot.

I've used this knot dozens of ties and it has never once failed.  I do 5 turns up, 5 down, and it holds really tight with no slipping at all.

I did have it slip ONCE (during my post-tying pull test) when connecting 20# braid to 8# mono, but it was because I accidentally only did 3 loops back instead of 5.

The key is to make sure the braid wraps are even and make an XXXXXX pattern over the looped mono/fluoro. Try to not let the wraps double up up or down... make the overlaps even and alternating as in the XXXXXX pattern, it'll hold every time!
