MarVaBC Posted February 1, 2008 Posted February 1, 2008 I like fishing 5" hula grubs for smallies on a football head. What are some good brands that I should look into. I've tried the BPS and GYCB ones with good results. Any suggestions on other good skirted grubs? I would like to buy some in >10pack if possible....like 25 or 50 pack. Thanks Quote

Davis Posted February 1, 2008 Posted February 1, 2008 i always think of buying them but never do how do u fish them and how do u rig them? and do they work? Throw em on a football jighead as your trailer. Then drag them or hop them. Deadly in rocky areas. Quote

VA BassHound Posted February 1, 2008 Posted February 1, 2008 4" Yamamoto double tail hula grub on a stand up jig head. Quote
Jeff C. Posted February 1, 2008 Posted February 1, 2008 I just started making my own double tails, have not tried um yet,, kind of cold here in Michigan.. :'( I hope they will be awsome.. very similar to Yami's.. I prefer "Chompers" skirted double tail grubs, atleast before I made my own.. texas rig weedles w/ 1/16 or 1/8 bullet Quote
BassFishingMachine Posted February 2, 2008 Posted February 2, 2008 All I know is GYCB are some great baits so I wouldn't change them. Just my honest opinion. Quote
JigNBig Posted February 3, 2008 Posted February 3, 2008 Chompers makes good Hula Grubs. But your gonna need to some gloves cuz dannggg they stink. Quote
SPAZ Posted February 3, 2008 Posted February 3, 2008 Chompers makes good Hula Grubs. But your gonna need to some gloves cuz dannggg they stink. I agree. I won't buy them again because they stink too much. Quote
Super User FishTank Posted February 3, 2008 Super User Posted February 3, 2008 Chompers is the only other one I have had success with. The GYCB hula grub in black with blue flake and a 1/4oz Tru Tungsten Weed Wacke is still my favorite. Quote
EdKras Posted February 7, 2008 Posted February 7, 2008 Hula/spider grubs are also great flipping/pitching baits. Texas rigged with a 3/8 oz weight Quote
Jeff C. Posted February 8, 2008 Posted February 8, 2008 the "Stink" you are smelling from Chompers is there G-Formula scent.. "Garlic" Thats part of the reason they work so good. Plus if you have that on your hands you will not give off Human scent on your other baits.. Quote
Dean Posted February 8, 2008 Posted February 8, 2008 This bait has caugh me tons of bass. It's the Berkey Sabertail Grub. Love the action of this bait, the way it's tail flutters as it moves along the bottom. It deserves a spot in anyones tackle box. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted February 8, 2008 Super User Posted February 8, 2008 In moving water on the Tennessee River and fishing deep structure on both Pickwick and Bull Shoals, I have had VERY good luck with the GYCB Single Tail Hula Grub. In relatively open water, a jig head rig works well, but for the most part I fish it T-rigged, weedless with a 1/8 oz barrel weight. In shallow water (<12') the GYCB Fat Ika, weightless and weedless, will usually outperform the Hula Grub. The action is significantly different. 8-) Quote
MarVaBC Posted February 8, 2008 Author Posted February 8, 2008 I experimented with the Ika a little bit last year. Like it a lot....fished it like a senko on a 4/0 ewg. I also had a lot of bites river fishing, throwing it upstream, and letting it tumble down....looks just like smallie food! Quote
Super User Tin Posted February 8, 2008 Super User Posted February 8, 2008 I don't think anyone has mentioned pitching them on a 1/4oz Arkie head with a weed guard. :-X Quote

No idea why I stopped using it after that? I'm definitely going to focus on using it again this spring. Quote
