northern basser Posted July 23, 2010 Posted July 23, 2010 I tried a search for this and did find some answers, however I figured I'd ask what I want to know. I'm looking for a new combo that I can use for heavy cover and heavier baits. Cabela's XML rods are like half off (69.99) so I'm going with a 7' Heavy, fast action. Also, I've decided I want a Revo. Yesterday at Cabela's I held a sx and it felt good, for whatever that's worth. They didn't have a stx in the case for me to compare. Keeping in mind I'm going to use it for heavier stuff (already have reels for light duty) Is it worth getting a stx? $ is a little of a concern for me because I already sprung for a core this year along with a couple new rods. Super User Shane J Posted July 23, 2010 Super User Posted July 23, 2010 Definitely go with the high speed STX, and spool her up with some 50lb braid, and that combo will serve you very well for what you need it for. Quote
Super User KYntucky Warmouth Posted July 23, 2010 Super User Posted July 23, 2010 I would say go with the STX too but I wouldn't buy it form Cabelas. If you are going to pay retail there for the SX, I would get an STX off of Ebay for the same price. Quote
Super User slonezp Posted July 23, 2010 Super User Posted July 23, 2010 Keeping in mind I'm going to use it for heavier stuff (already have reels for light duty) Is it worth getting a stx? Heavier stuff? Heavy cover? Baits? Fish? Please clarify. Quote

KSRonH Posted July 23, 2010 Posted July 23, 2010 I use Revo's and the Premier is my favorite, but To answer your question between the SX and STX, IMO I'd go with the SX. I have the 09 model and I prefer it to the STX. Contrary to what many have said I find it very easy to dial in. I use my SX on a Techna AV and can cast 3/8 oz lures and up. It casts extremely smooth and rarely if ever do I get a backlash. You also mentioned cost as a concern and gloomis.us has the 09 SX's for $99.00. Hope this helps and either way you'll enjoy the Revo's. Quote
northern basser Posted July 23, 2010 Author Posted July 23, 2010 First off, thanks for the replies. As far as being specific about use, most of my rods need to serve more than one or two purposes. Currently my BC arsenal only consists of: -core 50mg7/ helium ltx 6'6" mh fast -chronarch 50mg/ magnesium ts 7' m mod. fast -curado e7/ Dodyns champion 733 Anyways, what I am getting at is the need for a heavy combo. Heavy cover and more specifically lg. swimbaits. SB's are kind of new to me. I've been using the 733, which does the job, but those swimbaits are like throwing a 20# turd. I'm interested in the revo series because of their drag and my curiousity to venture outside of my beloved shimanos. So if the ability to cast lighter baits is the only thing the stx has on the sx, I will go with the sx. BTW, I'm on E-bay a lot and was only going to snag the rod at Cabela's. Thanks. Quote
Super User Chris at Tech Posted July 23, 2010 Super User Posted July 23, 2010 You shouldn't really "feel" a difference between the SX and the STX. Externally, they're just about identical except for color. And both should be fine for "heavier stuff". I'd spring the extra $$$ for the STX. The main upgrade you're getting is the dual casting control which has been outstanding on my Premier. The SX does not have this dual control. Quote
northern basser Posted July 24, 2010 Author Posted July 24, 2010 Thanks again everyone. I might just end up with the stx. On ebay I'm watching a few of both and the prices are real close despite the $30 retail difference. Quote
Super User OkobojiEagle Posted July 24, 2010 Super User Posted July 24, 2010 For your stated purpose, the Revo S is quite adequate. steve Quote
smallwatermayhem Posted July 24, 2010 Posted July 24, 2010 I'd save cash and go with the Revo S. Just my opinion. Quote
21farms Posted July 24, 2010 Posted July 24, 2010 i've had the S, SX and now an STX (albeit a 2010 model). liked the S, hated the SX and still awaiting a chance to use my STX. 2009 SXs are polarizing...people either love 'em or hate 'em. if you have a consistently fluid casting motion, they are great. for 2010, abu added another row of magnets but my problems were not because it didn't have enough magnetic force so i'm still away. i haven't used my STX yet but i've had excellent luck with my other reels with the dual centrifrugal/magnetic brakes. personally, i'd buy an STX from cabelas instead of ebay...the ones from ebay do NOT qualify for the free wiley-X sunglasses. if you want, i'll give you my $30 off $150 purchase code for cabelas (PM me if you want it). crankbait2009 Posted July 25, 2010 Posted July 25, 2010 i was under the same predicament at the beginning of this fishing season. I ended up buying the 2010 STX on ebay for cheaper than i would have going to BPS and buying it full price + tax. I think i got one off ebay for $175 and that included shipping. then i turned around and sent in the receippt to Abu Garcia for the Wiley sunglass promo. they accepted it with no issues at all. as long as the receipt doesnt show any form of it being an EBAY transaction...........your good to go!! besides the sunglass offer, the STX rocks!! i throw 1/4oz-1/2oz lures and i have had NO PROBLEMS what so ever. my rod can handle 1/2oz max so never had a chance to throw anything heavier than that. GO STX!!! Quote
adclem Posted July 25, 2010 Posted July 25, 2010 Both reels are pretty much the same. The STX adds a lighter spool and dual braking system and other then that they are the same reels. Either reel should handle the job you plan on using it for. Later, Quote
