Super User new2BC4bass Posted July 15, 2010 Super User Posted July 15, 2010 spinning reel thread. I planned on asking you about it today. Too late last night. You said it took 2 years to get it dialed in right. That is not exactly the kind of news I want to hear. I have an 09 spooled with 40 lb. Sufix braid and mounted on a Techna AV 7' MH rod. I was hoping to use this with 10" weightless worms when visiting Florida. We spend a lot of time there fishing the pads. Also want to try jigs with this combo. I've thrown it a few times in my back yard with a lead weight on it. Distance is limited, so I haven't made any hard casts with it yet. I felt this setup was a bit too much for the fishing I've done so far locally. However, last time I was at Minisi Lake, the pads were up. Guess I will have to get there early one weekend morning, and see how it handles for me. I know from experience that light lures are still giving me major problems with my casting. I'd like to hear what your experiences were in getting this reel dialed in. What was causing an experienced guy like yourself to have such a hard time getting it right? Any advice would probably be a huge help because my casting experience is very very thin. If anyone else wants to make a few comments, don't be bashful. Jump in with both feet. ;D Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted July 15, 2010 Super User Posted July 15, 2010 My retarded comment was about a Revo STX baitcasting reel, not a spinning reel. I know nothing about the spinning reel, comment deleted. :-? Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted July 15, 2010 Author Super User Posted July 15, 2010 I realized that. The casting reel is the one I am wanting information on. Quote
kLuo Posted July 15, 2010 Posted July 15, 2010 I learned how to use a baitcaster on a Revo STX earlier this season actually. It took almost no effort at all for me to make the switch from spinning, and I was casting and pitching almost perfectly by my second outing. The key is to buy practice casting plugs and practice on your lawn. Half an hour of that and you will be all set. Quote
tbird Posted July 15, 2010 Posted July 15, 2010 If I remeber correctly you have to turn the magnetic control to 0 and then adjust your cast control .Then you adjust your magnetic control ...I think that's the way it was T Quote
MaxumBass Posted July 15, 2010 Posted July 15, 2010 I have an STX that I can't seem to get adjusted to throwing light stuff also. I have one centrifugal brake on and the mag brake in the middle or wear ever I can put in without over running. I have a couple Curado's , a Citica all with the same line and basically the same rods and all will out perform the STX. I have a 60 dollar browning the can throw stuff farther. Maybe I got a bad one. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted July 15, 2010 Posted July 15, 2010 The Revos respond especially well to a thorough cleaning and proper lube, even new out of the box. The best way to really compare one reel to another is to spool both with fresh line of the same brand and size and cast the same plug on the same (not similar) rod. This eliminates as many variables as possible. Quote

Super User roadwarrior Posted July 15, 2010 Super User Posted July 15, 2010 The biggest issue for me is resetting the brake everytime I fish. It also needs adjustment for every class of lure. My STX is now permanently saddled to a MBR844C for weighted soft plastics or jigs...nothing else. This is where the settings have settled after a great deal of experimentation: Brake +/- 3/4 Max; Cast Control basically off, just above the point where the spool begins to wiggle. My thumb has learned how to stop a lure, but doesn't do as well tweaking the initial release. Send your reel to Delaware Valley Tackle for a thorough cleaning and lube. The improved performance is noticeable even on brand new equipment. Good luck! 8-) Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted July 15, 2010 Author Super User Posted July 15, 2010 Appreciate the additional comments. I looked a couple months ago at Dick's for a practice plug, but apparently they don't carry them. I thought the 09 model only had one type of brake? Will have to dig my manual out again, and refresh my memory. ;D I've been using my Daiwas. I was hoping to use my STX for jigs and unweighted plastics. Sounds like I might have to rethink that. I've read several comments from people who have loved the casting ability of the STX. A few haven't. Speaking of thumb control on the release, I about gave myself a brush burn on my poor thumb the other day. ;D ;D Anyone ever accomplished a brush burn? Quote
L a r r y Posted July 15, 2010 Posted July 15, 2010 I have a 09 STX-HS to be exact and to be honest, I LOVE THIS THING!!!!!!!! Now I do not pitch with it, but I can throw small cranks and weightless plastics with it and I can get good distance. Now take it I don't get as good distance with throwing a .25 ounce or larger, but still it is decent. I have it spooled with PP 50??? (I believe) It takes a while to get things dialed in, it took me about a week to get it just the way I wanted it with a click or two from the magnetic brakes when I switch between lures. Don't give up hope on this amazing reel, it is quite finicky, but it will reward you with countless fishing experiences on the water once you get it dialed in to how you fish.
