Hello guys, first posting on this site. I just recently got into fishing again. I have a BPS pro qualifier baitcaster combo that is great. Now I'm looking for a decent spinning reel and rod to use in the creeks around here. I'm looking at a Shimano Sedona reel and wonder what you guys think about it or would you get something different? Do you have to spend a lot of money to get a good reel? What do you guys look for in a spinning reel and rod?

the sedona is a great reel.  I have a couple of these and use them for inshore fishing as well as bass fishing and they've held up quite nicely.  Any shimano spinning reel from the sedona model up are nice.  If you've got $200 check out the shimano stradic CI4, best spinning reel in that price range.

Anything Shimano!  :)

I would bump up to a Sahara, minimum.  This gets you an aluminum frame in any reel larger than the 1000 size (which is too small anyway) instead of a graphite frame, like the Sedona.

A Symetre or Stradic FI would be a good choice if you want a good reel but don't want to spend too much.  If you have around $200 to spend, look into the Stadic CI4, I guarantee you wouldn't be disappointed in that reel.

Like other posters have said any Shimano reel from the Sahara up will be a nice reel.  I have a Stradic 3000 and a Symetre 2500 both are very nice reals if you want to save some $ money go for a Sahara or Symetre, but if you got the cash I would defiantly get the Stradic.

ebay is your friend.

i picked up a new abu garcia 602 for $30 shipped. there are plenty deals to be found on that site.

Shimano makes great reels if buying stradic on up, otherwise more bang for buck else where.  I would go to a tackle shop and compare what you like best at a given price range.

I have a sedona,  2 symetre's,  and a stradic fi.  Don't be afraid of the sedona if you don't wish to spend any more than that.  It is a nice reel.  Otherwise,  for the money,  I really like the symetre.  Awesome reel for under $100.

yeah...

shimanos are great but honestly, ive owned many a daiwa and shimano spinning reel over the years esp before i got into baitcasting... and i have to say, the quantum incyte is the nicest and longest lasting spinning reel ive ever owned at any price point below 150 dollars. and its only 54.

you can probably find them cheaper than that.

ive had my first one (a 40 size) going on probably 5 years now of heavy salt water abuse (reds and blues and a shark here and there...) and it runs like the day i got it. with no real maitenence. the handle has corroded a tiny bit... but affects the performance none.

i got a newer one and us it only for freshwater... relegating the old one to strictly saltwater.

you can not beat them for the money. period.

I have an older Quantum Incyte as well that is still in service and a newer Incyte would be a nice reel. I would also suggest the Daiwa Exceler or Daiwa Regal XiA or the New Quantum Kinetic and then the Newer Sahara.

Ebay would be your friend for all of them if there isn't a sporting goods store nearby.

I have had a Spirex 49.99$, Sedona 59.99$ (still do), Sahara79.99$ and Symetre 99.99$. Of all 4 I still use the Sedona, sold all others a while back for money reasons. Worse mistake of my life lol. The symtre is incredible IMO. The Sahara is great as well and so is the Sedona. I would stay away from the spirex though. I Use the sedona cause it is cheap but effective and reliable. If you can, spring for the Symetre or Sahara.

If the Sedona is in your price range it is well worth it IMO. Great bang for your buck.   :)

I recommend getting the best quality spinning reel you can reasonably afford. I have all Shimano spinning rees, a Sahara, Symetre, (2) Stradics and a Sustain. The Sahara is a very decent reel, and is comparable to the Symetre. When you move up to the Stradic, you can definately feel a significant improvement in quality. Less so from the Stradic to the Sustain IMHO. Still, the Sustain is noticeably smoother and is the reel I use when fishing moving baits.

Keep your eyes peeled for deals in the forum flea market as well.

Just yesterday I snagged an Abu Garcia C801 for 40 bucks shipped to my door.

The Pflueger President is a fine reel with a solid track record. Tough to find better performance and value at the $60 price point

Sedona's are great reels for the money. As long as you take care of it you will get many years out of it.

One of the best buys is the Daiwa Exceler. I know a site that sells them for 64.99 shipped,I have a 2000,and had a 2500,,both very good.

you can pick up a used 2000 or 2500 Daiwa sol in good condition for 100-120 bucks on Ebay or in forums for sale areas... the SOL will out preform any of those reels listed you just have to get a used one to put it in your price range... that reel is solid and fishes like a BMW!! I dont fish spinning reels at all really I have 2 TD-Z R+'s and a Steez but rarely pick them up... but dad LOVES his SOL's and Fuego A's..
