Super User BASSclary Posted July 7, 2010 Super User Posted July 7, 2010 So guys basically Ive spent about 30 hours laying tile floor in a basement for my moms friend, and she's paying me $10 an hour! ;D Not bad by any means for a 14 year old kid! But me and my dad love to fish, but were really limited to where we can fish because we dont have a boat :-[ Basically we can only fish at 3-5 places, and were limited to only so much casting room. So my question is, should i buy a nice brand new combo? Or should i buy a used Jon Boat off craigslist, ebay etc. ??? :-? Edit: Almost everywhere near where we live has a boat launch! Quote
Redsyn Posted July 7, 2010 Posted July 7, 2010 buy the boat. this way you and your dad can enjoy it together. You will probably catch more fish using the boat than a brand new combo. Quote
Nebraska Bassin Posted July 7, 2010 Posted July 7, 2010 A boat is definitely the way to go. Like Redsyn said, that way you and your dad can take it out and really start catching the fish. Quote
CFFF 1.5 Posted July 7, 2010 Posted July 7, 2010 Get a 12' Jon boat with a 50lb thrust trolling motor. I find myself fishing smaller ponds in my jon boat than in my big boat most of the time. Quote
NateFollmer Posted July 7, 2010 Posted July 7, 2010 Boat.. Jon Boats are like fall out shelters... You'll have it a lifetime if you maintain it. Quote
Super User Catt Posted July 7, 2010 Super User Posted July 7, 2010 At 59 years old I vaguely remember the rod/reels I had at age 14 but I remember in vivid detail the fishing/hunting trips my Dad & I shared. Quote
Super User SoFlaBassAddict Posted July 7, 2010 Super User Posted July 7, 2010 No question about it, buy a boat. Quote
Stasher1 Posted July 7, 2010 Posted July 7, 2010 I agree with everybody else on this one. Buy a boat. Even an inexpensive used canoe will get you into places you'd never reach from the shore, and won't require a trailer or pickup truck. I used to carry my 16' Mad River Explorer around on a Ford Escort. Quote
Super User BASSclary Posted July 7, 2010 Author Super User Posted July 7, 2010 Thanks guys! I really want to get a boat but what size would be able to fit on top of a mini van? My dad had to sell his truck, when the gas prices where extremely high. So i dont want to get like a 15 footer, because i cannot afford a trailer. And also how much is it to register a boat in the State of Virginia? ( I only have to register if i use a motor of any sorts ) So would registering be worth a trolling motor? :-? Quote

I throw my 11' jon boat on top of my mom van all the time but depending on how much you got to spend you come across a good deal for boat and trailer ranging from $400 to $600. $27 for boat registration and title for anything under 16'. http://www.dgif.virginia.gov/boating/registration/ Quote
