Line breaking mid cast?

Hey Guys,

Just started using a baitcaster. I first had 12lb mono Stren on the reel. Then switched to 14lb Berkley xt. I've lost 3 spinnerbaits like this. I cast out & mid way through the cast the line breaks & gone is my spinnerbait! Its not coming untied it snaps in the middle. I always check my line if I get caught up or after a fish. What's happening? Could it be getting nicked from back lashes? What can I do to prevent this?

i've snapped spinnerbaits and jigs mid cast before on 50lb braid. if the spool comes to a sudden stop mid cast kiss your lure good bye. last time i broke off mid cast was because my line looped off the spool and wrapped around the twitchin bar on my Viento, causing the spool to come to a halt.

Ah, another fine side effect of backlashing... I lost 2 Rapala Clackin' Raps this way... I love when 1 cast costs you $8!

About the only thing you can do is make sure your brakes and dial are properly set to prevent a backlash. It's going to happen a lot until you learn how to cast with a baitcaster. It's very different from casting spinning equipment.

I have never had that happen with  a baitcaster, but many times on spinning gear, either cause of line twist it gets caught on the bail or something or just cause I wasn't paying attention and forgot to open the bail LOL

Check your guides for a small chip (ceramic inserts) or burr (SS rings)

I thought I posted this post this afternoon, but I don't see it here...

so here goes again...

I used to use a Bass Pro Baitcast Bic to unclear my backlashes, and I found that I was having mysterious line breaks. The Bic would nick the line when I was using it, causing the line break while casting.

I rarely use the Bic now, and only in extreme cases, and then i am very careful.

Also, I used to have some mysterious line breaks with P-Line Floroclear, but I haven't had any for a long time.

The breaks were mysterious, sometimes happening at home when I was rigging up my rods.

Being new to bait casting I'd guess you are having some backlashes which can damage your line.

I used to have this same problem! One day i wanted to go fishing with my old man , but i needed line. And my dad honestly doesnt care about line quality, he just wants to buy the cheapest, and he knew i wanted some fluoro.

So guess what he got me,..... Berkley Vanish in 8#

It would be accurate to say i wasnt a happy fisher. But i had to use it if i wanted to fish. have to take a chance right?. Should have stayed home. I would backlash tremendously. And while i lost some lures do to the spool suddenly stopping . there was a problem rising right under my nose. When i was backlashing; line deep in the backlash was getting ripped in half. Yikes! And then on a random cast, my spinnerbait went bye bye with about 40 yds or line. Sucked. lost about 3 spinners and 2 jigs.

But if there is a bright side to this story today i was deep cranking and pulled up both my lost jigs, 1 spinner and 5 good sized largemouths !!! ;D (of course my mom bought me some 50# PP first )

Agree with B. Lee on the spinning aspect, never with conventional.   That's fishing, I never fall in love with a lure, don't own them long enough.

Based on your description, I would definitely chalk it up to your backlashes. You know when you pull on the line to untangle it and the garbled line comes to a stop? Just about every time you do this you risk adding kinks to your line. Unfortunately, when you do the typical line check these kinks will be well before any section of line you inspect and therefore will be missed.

The best thing you can do is strive to minimize backlashes and when you untangle them, do your best to undo them carefully enough to not kink the line.

If your line breaks in the middle of the cast, it's because you have a line knot in the middle of the spool or (most likely) you are causing a backlash in the middle of the cast.  With the spool turning at 20,000 rpm, it only takes an instant for a loop to develop, knot, and break the line.
