Power Pro at Walmart vs. others in any differences?

I was at Gander Mountain and they have the Power Pro braid in 50 lb test 150 yards I think for like $18 to where Wal-mart has theirs 50 lb test 150 yards for like $12.96 and BPS has theirs 50 lb 100 yards for $12.49. Is the Wal-mart brand no lesser quality than the others?? I was just wondering cause I might pick up a spool for frogging.

I cannot believe that it is of lessor quality just because it is sold at WalMart.  That would not go well for PowerPro.  I am sure that volume sales enables WalMart to sell it for less.

A coincidence as I just bought some PowerPro at Walmart for the first time a few days ago. What surprised me was that the 20lb that I bought was a 150 yard spool at Walmart, and BPS sells 100 yard spools in 20lb test. Sorta a no-brainer - 50% more for about the same price. Plus, the 150 yard spool works better for me as I can get two 75 yard spoolings out of it.

I have never had this problem with braid from wally-world, but often they store the line in a hot humid area witch can weaken mono and fluorocarbon, i recently bought a spool of 15 pound test trilene fluoro and right out of the package you could pinch the line in half, i have talked to other people who have had the same experience.

I hear stories ( on here ) about shelf life deteriorating PP at Walmart.....pure nonsense.

Pure nonsense is right.  It's like buying gas at the busiest local truck stop/gas station.  You're going to get fresher gas because of the high volume turnover.

I believe that it still is, but perhaps less than mono?

I posted a link to an article Aaron Martens wrote on line care, and from what I gathered reading it I'm assuming heat and sunlight do have an effect on fluorocarbon as well.

Be careful when you buy line there though, especially if you live in an area where fishing is not common, because i once picked up a spool of PP 30# and when i spooled up all the coloring came off (not just some, all) I later looked at the box and it had a date from 06. Been sitting around for 4 years. But usually they well let you exchange it which is nice  ;D

My only problem with Walmart is that they don't carry the 300yd spool at my local store.  Other than that you are getting the price break because of the volume they buy.  It's the same line.

No lie about a price break. Have you tried walmart.com for the 300 yards?

Another route to go when you only need 100 yds or so to be topped off is your local tackle shop.  PP is .11 a yd off their bulk spool.

My local Walmart does not carry 15#, so I go to tackle a shop to get topped off.

In your area of the country where there are a lot more people fishing it may be nonsense but up here when our BASS and TBF organizations do not have 300 people and there are much fewer fishermen it makes sense. Less fishermen = less people buying fishing line. So the same spool of line can sit on a Wal Mart shelf or in a back room for years. I don't know if braid is effected but I know flouro's are. Some of the boxes that the line comes in will be dusty and look like they have been on the shelf for months. If they get a shipment of line in the fall then some of it will be atleast six months old by the time it is ready for use in the spring.

Power Pro has been great and will continue to be great for years, the only difference is probably a slightly slightly newer color or something really small so that PP can throw a "NEW and improved" sticker on it. Its Just Marketing. 8-)

if the power pro comes in one of the "EZ spool" packages, you at least know that the line was manufactured after 10/2007.

as for "new and improved", power pro is working to increase the number of carriers in their lines. the "new formula" power pro should be coming out fairly soon.

It's still nonsense, that stuff does not fly off the shelves to fast at Walmart, I've seen the same boxes there for a year, a size I don't buy.  The Walmart I go to has a small fishing department with a slow turnnover.  I would have no reservations about using any of it regardless of age.  It's stored in a climate control environment in a sealed package, no sunlight hits the line and dust on the box never touches the line anyway.  I store my spooled reels (exposed line) in my garage, in Florida where the temps in the garage exceed over 100 degrees for 6 months at a time.  The line is fished under harsh salt water conditions and many of my reels haven't been changed for more than 2 years, line is just fine.

I'll take all the PP I can get from Walmart that has dust on the box.

ive been using powerpro for years for saltwater... way way before i heard of anyone using it in freshwater... and i have left line on a spool for a year or more without even blinking an eye. as long as it doesnt sit in the sun for months at a time... u should be fine.
