Transferring line from one reel to another?

Is it ok to spool  a reel with line from another reel? Would it lay right on the new spool?

If it's braid, yes.  Mono, no.   If you're changing out mono, then strip off about 50 yards or so and add new line.

Braid poses no problem, the line doesn 't have memory, but nylon, fluoro or copoly have and retain the memory, the deeper you go in the spool the tighter and smaller the coils and since the line has memory the more it will retain it for being spooled on a smaller surface and it 's not going to go away, you 'll be fishing with a slinky, also you will experience line manageability issues, not only it will look like a slinky it behaves like a spring, in a spinning reel the line will jump from the spool when you open the bail, in a BC reel it will jump in the spool and wrap creating backlashes.

Thanks thats kind of  what I thought.  I just spooled a new revo sx with xps flouro and then thought about using a different reel for the flouro app. Oh well i will just leave it as is.

If you want to switch line you can. Just reel the line off the reel with a spare reel then off that reel to the new one. Takes a bit of time but it can be done. This way the small coils are at the bottom of the spool still. But before you use it let a bunch of line out behind the boat and then reel in to alleviate line twist.

I've done it before many times (especially with Fluoro).  I'll spool up a reel with some line and then realize I want to use a different reel for that rod, but want to keep the lines.  Well, I spool the line off the reel onto a bulk spool and the respool what ever reel I want with that line.  I never had problems with extreme memory (by using a bulk spool, you keep the end of the line that was on the inside of the other reel as the inside of this reel) and never had problems with line twist.  I think you can do it with no problems (though, I have never done a line transfer with a spinning reel.  I think that would be a little more problematic).

I usually walk the line off the one spool out in the yard, then reel it up on the new reel. If you have the space to do it I think it helps. Never had the first issue with memory. (copoly and braid)

I do it from time to time. However, instead of using another reel, or a large spool, I set up two wood "pylons" about 100ft apart in my driveway and tie the end of the line to one pylon and just walk around the pylons until the line is out - then tie on to the other reel, then crank it back in with tension applied. As LCM said, this is mostly for baitcasting - not for spinning.

As a side note, I also use the pylons to apply the exact amount of backing under primo line like braid. Just yesterday I had a 150yd spool of braid and wanted to put 75 yards on a reel. I put the pylons 75ft apart, tied the braid to one - walked out the line for 3 lengths of the pylons and cut the braid. Then I taped the braid to the reel spool, cranked it all in, then tied a uni-uni knot with the backing, and cranked in backing until the spool was full. Then, I walked the line and backing back around the pylons, then attached the backing to the spool and cranked it all back in. A perfect fill. It's a chore but it works.

been doing it caster to caster for years.

there is some coiling at first with mono and fluoro...just spool it tight and tape the tag end to the spool...add a bit of line conditioner and you should be good to go.

there may be still some coiling once you get on the water, depending on brand of line used, but it usually goes away after a few casts.

Absolutely you can respool off another reel.

Here's a tip to get rid of all that kink you're going to end up with.

After you've completed the switch,  go to a place where you can strip off about 40 - 50 yds or so.  Put a loop knot on one end,  loop it over a fence post.  Start backing up until you've unspooled that 40-50 yds (or as far as you can back up). 

Now click the handle over, put your thumb on the spool to prevent the drag from releasing and start walking backwards.  This stretches the line out.  You don't have to go back too far.

Presto!!  Kinks gone!!

I do this on all my mono and flouro rods before I head for the lake.

I would buy an inexpensive rod and reel before I would buy " cheap" line.
