New reels and backlashing

I decided to upgrade a few reels with a revo and a couple pfluegers. I made sure when spooling them to keep tension on the line.

Problem is no matter how I adjust the mech brake I get backlashes. I have always in the past set the brake where the lure I am using just ever so slightly (and I mean slightly) drops when the release is pressed. I tried that and got a few backlashes. I tightened the brake a bit and the same result. I loosened the brake and you guessed it, backlash.

Someone please tell me what is going on. Like I said I have used the same reels for the past 6-7 years and have never had a problem like this.

Edit: I forgot to mention there are no mag brakes on these reels.

There are brakes - if not magnetic, they are centrifugal, under the left side plate. There are usually 6 small plastic brake blocks which are snapped outward to turn them ON and inward to turn them OFF. The centrifugal force of the spinning spool forces them against a brake drum to slow the spool and prevent overruns at the end of the cast. A typical scenario is to run the reel with every other block ON, for a total of 3 ON, 3 OFF. Check your owner's manual. JMHO, forget all the blah about how you SHOULD have your cast control and brakes set. Set it up in different configurations until you find the combo of brakes and cast control that works for YOU.  As you gain experience on the reel, you can modify the settings as your thumb becomes more "educated",

It would help to know what reels you bought, it sound like they are 6-pin centrifugal braking reels meaning a Revo S and either a President, Asaro, Trion, or Centina.  At any rate, the side plate will remove, should be a screw on the crank side you can move with your finger.  Inside, on the spool, are plastic stabs or caps, press them all toward the center then press every other one out, that will give you 50% braking on to start.
