How many of you have had your reels super tuned?

I read a article about this on the internet today it showed me how to do it and everything.  If you have had your reel super tuned has it made a difference in your cast length that you can tell?

In a word, No.

Now some reels respond to tuning more than others. You'll notice that a lot of tackle enthusiast take an already excellent reel, and super-tune the heck out of it.

If you take a Daiwa Zillion for example, add high-end spool bearings and a lightweight spool, you can make it's ability to cast lighter baits better, but the differences are subtle and the costs are high.

If you're starting with a quality used reel, the effects of a good tuning can be felt right away. Much of the increased performance can come from just having the reel cleaned and re-lubed properly along with having worn or low-grade bushings replaced and upgraded.

Same goes for replacing worn drag brakes with new carbontex units.The drag performance will be noticeably better (i.e. smoother and stronger) when replacing worn parts, not as much when just upgrading new parts for better new parts

I have done two Diawa Hsta's, two BPS Extremes,and two pinnacles. I did all the reels short of replacing bearings and drag washers (will do the drag washers in a week or so,on order for one Hsta).Out of all the reels the Extreme's had the best response.The Extremes came out smoother and cast better,with less effort.

The potential gain by super tuning a reel depends completely upon the model and condition of the reel to start out. There are some quality reels that can be taken to the next level like older Curados and Ambassaeurs. If you are unsure, have the reel properly cleaned and lubed first. That makes a noticeable difference in just about any reel. Super Tuning is largely for enthusiasts that are just into high performance stuff. I use the analogy of high performance cars. Reeves Callaway super tunes Corvettes. The people that buy these aren't driving 200 mph everywhere they go, but they know they could if they wanted to.  8-)

I've done a scaled back version of "super tune" to 3 of my old Abu's, and it has had some positive effect. The reels are much smoother, and it has made distance casting a bit more effortless. I skipped the coarser grit sandpaper work, and did everything with 2000 grit and polishing compound. As others have said, the teardown, cleaning, and re-lubing probably had just as much impact on the end result.

How many of you have had your reels super tuned?

I have.

First is an Ambassadeur 5000 that I put more money into than the law should allow. That reel is significantly better than when I started, but for the money I sunk into it, I could have bought a new Curado E7! (or just bought a new ABU Record and called it a day)

I have also tuned a pair of Daiwa Fuego's that I got from TW on clearance. I added a bearing to the worm drives, installed ceramic hybrid spool bearings, carbontex drag washers and polished a few key components. Truth be told, I tuned these two up when they were brand new. I never fished 'em in their stock configuration! I used the info I found over at TackleTour to tune these reels.

Well, a few weeks ago I fished a Fuego that

.gohti had super tuned...sweet! I have a

super tuned Scorpion 1000...sweet! On the

other hand, just a standard cleaning and lube

makes a great reel better.

From the stand point of just "fishing", you will

not notice much difference unless you are already

casting with no brakes on and the cast control open.

I'm not that good!
