Diawa Tierra or BPS Pro qualfier? I am going to add to this... and Citica.

I like the price of the pq on sale but i am also considering the Tierra I don't know much about either one so I am completely open to all suggestions, this will be my fourth baitcaster.

I own the Tierra, not a bad reel, but after fishing with Revo S's and Shimano Citca D's, i would rather have the latter 2 for the same $$.

I have the Pro Qualifier and love it, the DBS is really nice if you decide you need to throw a lighter bait.

Size and weight to start with. Also while they are both 6.something : 1 reels, the Citica feels more powerfull and can crank deeper running cranks, big bladed spinnerbaits, and other baits that pull hard with alot less effort thanks to Shimano's HEG gearing. Tierra has more bearings, but by no means is smoother than the Citicas, both cleaned and lubed the Citica will outcast Tierra with the same baits ,the same line on the same rod, and will keep casting better with less maint. The Shimano's 6 pin VBS is simple, set 2 on and forget it........forever, unless tossing very very light stuff, then you might only have to put 1 more brake on. The Mag brakes on the Tierra are better than no brakes, and better than Abu's mag brakes on the Revo SX, and the older STX, but they are still Mag breaks. I have to fiddle with them way to much depending on lure weights, wind, what type of cast I am doing (pitching, roll casting,skipping, etc etc....) and forget anything less than 3/8s oz with the Tierra, even with my trained thumb it's an adventure at best, I regularly cast 3/16 oz with the Citica.  Drag is smoother and more reliable on the Shimano. It seems like with the Tierra I either have to lock it down, or have way to little, not much middle ground. The Tierra has 2 things I like about it better than the Shimano, the longer handle, and the ability to pop the thumb bar up with my thumb after a pitch or cast to have the reel instantly engaged, insted of havign to turn the reel handle on the Citica.

To Smallmouth Bassin I'm a Pro Qualifier and a Carbonlite user which I love my 2 reels. I do favor my Carbonlite over my Pro but for $79.94 for the Pro I think is a great deal, giving I paid $99. for mine

Man, to be honest I have both and if I had to choose just one it would be the PQ. Dont get me wrong I love my Tierra, But for the $$ and the selection of gear ratio's the PQ just seems like a better deal. Like I said, I love my Tierra, but I would go for the PQ. The one I have seems like a solid built reel with a good braking system. I throw light cranks on it like Bomber square A and baits of that weight and size. It will cast those very far on a med action rod with 12lb fluoro. They are both good. Either choice you will be happy with.

I have a Tierra (which you can often find on eBay, at least in RH, for a lot less than retail), but not a Citica or PQ. 

I haven't really been pleased by BPS products in the past, even though the PQ has had rave reviews. 

Contrary to the posts above, I love my tierra and I think it's a fantastic caster.  It's very hard to backlash, I really like the breaking system (and the Magforce-Z is the highest end Daiwa one, I believe).  It casts better than the Curado101D I had.  I don't like centrifugal brakes, though.  I actually like being able to adjust my breaking to whatever kind of casting I want to do, and whatever the conditions are.

Also the drag on my Tierra is just fine, and smooth throughout its range.

how does the tierra compare to the citica, I am really not interested in the bps pq because while on sale it is not in 6.4:1.

The carbonlite is on sale for 99$ Its better than the PQ, I have 3 and 2 pq's.

I bought 2 of the new PQ's a couple months ago on sale, and while I like them well enough, if I had it to do again I would spend a few extra $$ and get a Revo S.  If the Revo S isn't in your list of reels you are interested in, then I would make the same recommendation to move up to the Citica.

The main reason I would go back and change my decision is that the frame on the PQ is not as sturdy as either the Revo S or the Citica.  There is a lot of graphite material used in the frame on the PQ and this has made me shy away from using it with baits that I need to put a lot of torque into the retrieve.  Also I feel that the Revo S has a better drag.  I can use my Revo S to pitch jigs and do heavy work, but I also use the same reel with different line and a different weight setup on my topwater rod to throw light poppers.

Some day I will be able to afford/justify a Revo STX or Premier, and then I will be in heaven...

i've owned the daiwa advantage (a slightly fancied up tierra), the revo S, and dozens of other reels over the last few years. i still have two citica Es as well as numerous other reels.

the tierra is a nice reel but i think the basic design is becoming rather dated. it's largish and the spool takes longer to start up. it doesn't sit as low on the reel seat than newer designs too. if you like the tierras, the cabelas prodigy is essentially the same reel with a swept handle and it's currently on sale for $80.

the revo S is very nice. built like a tank and fairly smooth. i don't think it does that well with lighter lures though and it never wowed me with it's casting distance.

i still have two of the citica Es...i like them a lot. all around good performers and i can't tell much difference between them and my curado Es.

as for the PQ, i have not tried one out but i don't doubt that they're good reels. i have a BPS prolite and a new carbonlite and they exceed my expectations at their price points. i was totally skeptical about the dual braking at first but it does indeed work well. the carbonlite, in particular is very nice, especially since it is currently on sale.
